Doing it for a contest.

Some rules: Bridge must weigh less than 1 pound. Can only use normal white elmer's-type glue. Width must be between 3.5" - 5".

We had a similar project when I was in HS. Some of the guys in the class coated their entire bridge with glue. Cheaters. :angry:

Load: The load will be applied by putting weights in a hanging container that is hooked onto a 3x3" rectangular plate placed at the midspan of each bridge. The bridge sould have a hole that is at least 1.5" long and .25" wide for the hook to go through and support the container. (see figure)

The bridge that supports the largest load before failure wins.

Failure of the bridge is defined as any of the following scenarios:
1. The bridge breaks into two or more pieces.
2. The load applied causes bridge to be unstable and fall, even if the bridge stays in one piece.
3. Excessive bending of the bridge occurs.[quote]

Attached to the hook will be a string. The string will be tied to a bucket handle. The bridge will span across 2 desks 18" apart. So the bucket will be hanging in the air. Then I just start putting in weights and hope i don't kill my bridge. :(

edit: must add some more rules
a) A spaghetti stick cannot be completely surrounded by other sticks. At least 30% of the length of a stick must be visible.

b) No more than 50% of the length of any stick may be laminated with glue.

c) Sticks may be cut shorter, but each piece must be at least 3.5" long. No more than 50% of the shortened length may be laminated with glue.

i did one out of tooth picks this year, it came out pretty good though it looked like crap, held 19 kilos :D, beat every one else and their multi-night efforts :D, gotta love procrastination...

Sweet, I love procrastination. I had to do a project once where we were supposed to put an egg in a shoebox and 2 bricks on each side and drop it from the 4th story of the school. The egg wasn't supposed to break, everyone else had these crazy contraptions, I wait till the last nite and wraped the egg in a paper towel, threw it in a coozie, threw the bricks in and some of those packaging peanuts , mine didn't break at all. Took me a whole 10 minutes.

The results are in.

Our bridge held a whopping 6 kilos. That's pretty bad, but I saw two bridges that couldn't even hold .5 kilos. :P

No prize for us. At the time I left, the current leader was a bridge that held 22 kilos.

And Zero, our bridges had weights pulling it down from the bottom, not pushing it down from the top. And our bridges were spanned over a gap.
