Ack. Those were the ghetto high school days. I quickly moved on to an alphanumeric pager and a cell phone. That was far too annoying. At any rate... Gotta give it up for the big 818.

All my hoes in LA... blah blah. Ok yeah every rap song is the same talking about bling bling, hoes, drugs, or shooting cops. Why can't rap have real life topics like Country music does. Country music sings of spilling sauce on my white t-shirt, and hitching the horse up for a ride. Come on all music should be like country music. :hihi::hihi::hihi:

I went to college in 909 . . . but live in 212 ;)

Oddly enough, now I've lived in the shortest to dial area code and the longest to dial area code (Based on the old rotary phones), which means I've lived in the most "prestigious" code, and by logical extension, the least "prestigious" ;)

PS - And no, I'm not saying that the area code really makes any difference ;) . . . but it was a prestigious thing for NYC to get the shortest-to-dial area code and a bit of a mark of honor. That's why we all hate that damn 646 area code!

whitak24

the 248 is what it's all about :D

ok, question, since we're discussing area codes:

i've noticed that many major cities have very easy area codes: detroit is 313, ny is 212, DC is 202, la is 818, etc. does anyone know if, when the area codes were first assigned (back in the 1960s or whenever) if there was a conscious effort to give these "repeating" area codes (first and last number the same) to large, frequentely-called cities so that people could remember them easier?

I think it was kind of a combined function of repeating and of how quickly they could be dialed using a rotary phone. Take NYC's 212 for instance . . . As you know, no area codes start with 0 or 1, so 2 was the first number an area code could start with, then 1 (easiest dialed second digit), then 2 (Easiest dialed 3rd digit when combined with 21X, since 211 is local community info) . . . hence, 212 was the quickest area code to dial . . . and it went to NYC, the city most likely to receive the most calls.

After the MAJOR cities, I think it became somewhat arbitrary, but heck if I know ;)

By far the armpit of California is Stockton. Both geographically and socially. There is nothing really worthwhile there even though they do have a university - University of the Pacific (though it's nowhere near the ocean).

A close second to Stockton in armpit-status is Bakersfield. I normally refer this as Bakershell, because if anybody has been there in July you will know what I'm talking about. The best thing about Bakershell is seeing it in my rear-view mirror.
