"It looks like something you'd see on the Jetsons.
But soon, you could see the Segway zooming along the streets of San Francisco. Mayor Willie Brown took the battery-powered human transporter for a spin around City Hall Monday, and he says he's considering making San Francisco the first West Coast test city for Segway. Police officers would try out the device at airports and city parks.
"When the skaters are in Golden Gate Park, my police officers are now having to use bicycles," Brown said. "This becomes the perfect alternative."
Segway can go up to 12.5 miles per hour. Inventor Dean Kamen says that's about three to four times the average walking speed.
"A half-hour walk becomes eight or ten minutes," Kamen said. "And they're not a hazard to people who use them or people around them."
During my test drive, I got to see just how easy it is to maneuver. The wheels don't scratch or scar. The Segway is also very lightweight, weighing only about 80 lbs. The price tag is a little weightier, at about $8000 each. But it would be a free ride to the city of San Francisco during the test run.
