April 24 — AOL Time Warner reported a first-quarter net loss of $54.24 billion Wednesday, largely due to a huge $54 billion charge to write down the value of assets. The media giant also lowered its company-wide guidance for the year due to a collapse in advertising at its AOL online unit.

THE ENORMOUS QUARTERLY LOSS was the largest in U.S. corporate history, exceeding the previous largest quarterly loss reported by former telecom high-flier JDS Uniphase of $41.8 billion in its first quarter of 2001.

AOL Time Warner’s loss was almost entirely due to a goodwill writedown related to a sharp decline in the company’s stock, which has fallen by more than half since the merger of America Online and Time Warner announced in January of 2000. In the same period a year ago, AOL Time Warner had a net loss of $1.4 billion.

If AOL and Microsoft would go belly-under, it wouldn't bother me.

I'm now hearing rumors that they will "spin-off" AOL into it's own company. :banghead:

If I recall, the reason the two of them got together is that AOL had the Internet customers and Time Warner had the capability for high speed access. The infrastructure is still not there and the interest in high speed Internet is not as high as originally anticipated.
But any idiot could have foreseen that.

Oh wait nevermind I'm poor and have no stock. If I did I'd invest in something secure like a energy brokerage firm. I heard one of those is the biggest company in the whole US, yeah definately invest heavily into those energy brokerage firms

Actually the whole deal was brilliant. At the time AOL's stock was at a real high level (Remember the .com bubble?) AOL took that inflated asset (their stock) and used to it to purchase "real" assets from TimeWarner. They knew the party would end sometime and wanted to still have something real that they were able to buy with their overinflated stock. Why did TimeWarner go for it? Because they got paid a boatload - Hell it was funnymoney so what did AOL care. In the end the only real losers are those who wanted to be long-term holders of TimeWarner.

I don't care what happens as long as they leave Roadrunner as a separate company and keep it going. I don't care what happes to the rest.

I'm so glad that AOL posts a massive loss and hopefully they will stop sending their useless CD to my place everyday.
