View Full Version : How to check if a website/business is legit?

I was just wondering because I know there are a lot of internet savy people here. I ran into www.animedvdshop.com and the prices seem to be pretty good. I was wondering if there was a way to find if its legit. They only accept paypal, money order, and checks, but everything else looks OK. They DO accept credit card payments through paypal though and everything else seems to look professional, but I was wondering if anyone could find out with a higher degree of certainty...

Wait 6 months. If they're still around, they're probably legit.
PayPal does not offer the buyer the same protection as a credit card transaction with someone with an actual merchant account. Anyone, even a thief, can have a PayPal account.

I was scammed out of $750 paying via credit card through paypal. Paypal wouldn't get my money back, but my CC company took it from paypal and paypal banned me. I think CC through paypal is pretty safe.

look up the site on www.whois.net and you can learn a bit more about a co. Also, call they're cust. serv. # and chat with the rep awhile. Then make an educated guess (hypothesis)?

You might want to check out www.resellerratings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com) to see if anyone has used them before.

check pricegrabber.com, as they have reviews for some e-tailers.
google on the site name and see if you can find anything else (sometimes, people will post a page detailing their problems with some store).
