Girls made to show underwear at school dance
April 30, 2002 Posted: 4:26 PM EDT (2026 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Angry parents demanded the resignation of a California high school vice principal Tuesday because she lifted the skirts of teenage girls at a dance in front of men and male classmates to make sure they were wearing "appropriate" underwear.

Parents at Rancho Bernardo High School in suburban San Diego say the vice principal, Rita Wilson, made the girls prove that they were not wearing thong underwear before they were allowed into the dance on Friday.

In some cases, said Rancho Bernardo parent Kim Teal, girls also were made to partially undress if Wilson or another teacher suspected that they weren't wearing bras.

"These girls feel violated," said Teal, whose daughter Rebecca, a sophomore, was asked about her underwear but escaped a search after telling Wilson that she was not wearing a thong. "One girl just cried after having to tell her father this story, she was hiding her head in a sweatshirt," Teal said. "After a while the girls finally got the idea that they shouldn't say 'thong' when they were asked.

Wilson and Paul Gentle, Rancho Bernardo's principal, were unavailable for comment on the skirt-lifting. But earlier Gentle told local KGTV that he was looking into the situation and planned a meeting with the offended parents.

Don Phillips, superintendent of the Poway Unified School District, said students, staff and others were being interviewed to determine what happened at the dance, which he said was attended by about 725 pupils.

"The principal is talking with the parents involved," he said. "We are taking this seriously and want to ensure that any actions to be taken are based on the facts of the situation."

Teal, a 43-year-old attorney, said she was told about the skirt-lifting after the dance by her daughter, whose friends were forced to lift their skirts in front of boys, teachers and police officers standing at the door.

She said hundreds of girls attended the dance, which had a "blast from the past" theme and that most of those wearing skirts or dresses reported being grilled about their underwear or forced to show them to Wilson or another teacher.

Teachers also checked several boys who were wearing toga-style costumes, Teal said, and girls were often asked about their bras. "I just got a call from one mom who said her daughter was wearing a poodle skirt and an off-the-shoulder top and a teacher reached right out and grabbed the front of it and pulled it down to check," Teal said.

Teal said she and other parents would meet with Gentle to demand the resignation of Wilson and any other teachers willingly involved. If Wilson does not resign, she said, the parents were prepared to file a lawsuit against the school district for violating the civil rights of their daughters.

Damn, they found out about my ruse! And I was enjoying it too!

Seriously though, I had not heard about that yet, and figuring its right here (about 3 mile drive to RB high) that is kind of weird. What the heck is wrong with people?

And you gotta wonder.. The article said that the check was being done in front of officers, and other teachers/faculty. So why didn't they speak up? Why didn't these adults know better?

Sheesh..with the way kids these days dress, you'd think that the school would have enough to worry about with the girls' outer clothes! Who cares what kind of underwear they are wearing! Someone's getting sued!

Wow, that's right up the street from my work. I went to a school that was facist like that too. We would get checked for hair legnth every so often by the counselors. If you had any part of your head shaved (and it didn't look like you were military) they would make you shave your whole head. It was ridiculous, but not as much as that bs at RB highschool, that is so intrusive and wrong. :thumbdown

Hmmm, right up the street from your work, eh. So you are either going to go postal some day or a TRW employee. Of course you could just work at one of the many retail establishments that preliferate CMR.

SAN DIEGO, California (AP) -- A female assistant principal was demoted for lifting girls' skirts to make sure they weren't wearing thongs to a high school dance.

Rita Wilson's thong check April 26 in front of male students and adults had enraged parents, one of whom threatened to sue.

The Rancho Bernardo High School administrator, who has tenure, will be reassigned to a teaching position, the school board decided Monday.

"I'm very disappointed and deeply saddened," Wilson, 47, said as she wiped away tears and hugged supporters.

An investigation by the school district concluded Wilson "went far beyond the grounds of propriety" with the underwear inspection.

Students said Wilson lifted girls' skirts before they entered the dance, and told those wearing thongs to go home and change.

Wilson said she was concerned the combination of revealing clothing and suggestive dancing could lead to sexual assaults.

I'm still disappointed.. I'd think that the other fools that stood by and let it happen should get penalized as well. She had supporters? There were others who supported humiliating those girls? :hmm: I'm at least glad that she had good intentions, but thats still no excuse..

The principal sounds a little fruity if you ask me. Give her some time off and send her to the funny farm for a little bit.:D

Burn her like people just like her used to do to witches!

Insn't exposing the girls in front of male students a sexual asault in and of itself? What's next? Killing all the students to protect them from violence?

Well, you know what they say - "Fighting for peace is like f***ing for virginity"

Seriously - if she was afraid that there was the risk of sexual assault, don't you think it would have made more sense for her to address the issue with the potential *attackers*, not the potential victims??

excellent point, grimm.

either she's come up with a desperate attempt at logic to justify her actions after the fact or else she is just a really weird person.

whatever the case, i don't see how reassigning her to a teaching position is a step in the right direction. sure, it's a demotion, but how is it going to make students feel better if they have to go to class with the "panty-checker". if i was an insecure high school girl, i think that would make me pretty nervous and cause emotional distress to have to go into her class every day.

she should have been fired, tenure be damned. there's something wrong with a tenure system that protects someone who sexually assults students

if i had power, she would be scrubbing outr the school systems dumpsters, or on the street looking for a new job. People like this do not have a right to be working in our nations school systems.

Hahahaha :heh:

No matter what happens to her career, that woman needs to be sued for every penny she'll ever earn. I'm still not sure why there were no criminal charges filed. :hmm:

man.. i just think suggestive or not... if the guy is able to see the inner wear then they are at a stage where it doesn't matter if it was a thong or not...

I just can't understand why the system protects people like teachers and priests who abuse the position of trust that they hold. Demotions and reassignments are not acceptable.
