odd... network junk

i have a a 4 port linksys router connected to my cable modem then to 2 computers. one is running Win98 se and the other, XP.i configure the netowrk pop the setting on each compute then boot up and watch the 98se comp zoom, while the Xp comp connects but is slower then 56k. ive checked drivers twice , im using the same linksys NIC's, also tryed connected and finding IP's with and without each of the computers.

How is the speed if you connect the xp box directly to the modem?

its been crap thru the NIC card, perhaps something it primarily wrog with the XP system, though it runs fine through the usb port in the cable modem..... any ideas?
