LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Could the end be near for cult television cartoon family "The Simpsons?"

"I think we are closer to winding it up," the television show's creator, Matt Groening told the Financial Times in an interview published Tuesday.

"Although what happens generally if we win the Emmy for best animation show is that that gives us another couple of years to run it into the ground," he said.

Groening has earned millions for media baron Rupert Murdoch's Fox network since the series featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie first entered the lives of television viewers in 1989.

Its appeal has spread far beyond its American setting and its dysfunctional characters have become globally recognized symbols of mid-life crisis and childhood rebellion.

TV Guide magazine recently placed the animated show eighth on its list of the 50 greatest television shows of all time.

When a recent episode depicted Rio de Janeiro as teeming with rats, monkeys and street crime, Brazilian tourist officials were outraged and the show's executive producer was forced to apologize.

Even so, Groening admitted to weariness with the formula of the show, now in its 13th year. "It becomes increasingly difficult as the years go by to keep on not only surprising the audience, but surprising ourselves," he said.

He said he doubted, however, that his creative angst would overly concern the television accountants. "I think Fox will wring every last penny out of the show before they call it a day," he said.

I mostly watch reruns anyways....but to think that I may someday run out of reruns to watch :(

I'm glad a formal announcement was made. The show had a long, exciting run, much longer than anyone could have hoped for. I really hope they end it soon before the plots turn into pure garbage.

I posted this in another thread.. :) but yeah.. it was bound to happen. All (good) things must come to an end. Yeah, the plotline does get watered down eventually.. I mean they can only think of so many storylines. At least all the episodes are coming out on DVD. :) But looking at the article, it doesn't seem as if they've made a "formal announcement". Just said the chances are likely that its winding down.

I'll miss it, but I'm also glad they'll go out "on top" rather than forced out because it's no longer good.

Geez you guys, you act like it's canceled. All he is saying is that "someday" he'll close up shop on it. I think it will be around a while yet.

I agree, the ratings are still doing well. I doubt he is going to cancel it in the near future.

I have not been able to watch the Simpsons since about 1994. My schedule just doesn't allow for much TV. I really loved the show when I used to watch it, so I'm looking forward to watching them all on reruns when the kids are all moved out!

I don't think it's going to be cancelled SOON. Groening is probably just getting tired of it. It will probably be around for a few more years man. Like he said, FOX isn't going to let him just quit and neither are the fans :)

I think they need to follow up on some of the Simpson's spin-off's. I know I'd watch "The Love-Matic Grandpa"!

Which probably explains all those jokes/insults against FOX

Lady: For automated stock prices, please state the company name.
Homer: Animotion.
Lady: Animotion. Up one and one half.
Homer: Yahoo!
Lady: Yahoo! Up six and a quarter.
Homer: Huh, what is this crap?
Lady: Fox Broadcasting. Down eight.

Homer: This Friday, we're going back to the woods and we're going to find that alien!
Bart: What if we don't?
Homer: We'll fake it, and sell it to the Fox network.
Bart: [chuckles] They'll buy anything.
Homer: Now, son, they do a lot of quality programming, too. [the two bust up laughing] I kill me.

As long as there is something to make fun of, the Simpsons will stay alive. Besides, FOX is still raking in the $$ on that show.
