View Full Version : Do RAIDed drives have to be identical?

I have a 40G Maxtor DiamondPlus. I was thinking about picking up another and running them in RAID. I'm having trouble finding an identical drive. Do I risk stability if I run another 40G with a different seek time? (ie: the newer ATA133 40G Maxtors)
No, the drives can be different. Simple spanning can use, say, a 20gb and a 40gb for a total of 60gb. For mirroring, the smallest partition size is the rule. If you have a 20gb and 40gb drive, only 20gb of the 40gb drive will be used for the array.

the speed will be limited by the slowest of the two drives, but otherwise it will be fine.
