I never have done it, but I do know you need to take the plastic off the drive before anything!!!

Step 1) Remove the CD-ROM drive from the computer.
Step 2) Pop off the cd faceplate. It should just have a couple of plastic clips on the sides or top and bottom.
Step 3) Pop off the facade of the drive tray.
Step 4) Go to Home Depot and get a can of gray automotive primer, black semi gloss or flat paint (a can of Quick Color should suffice, and a can of clear gloss or satin finish depending on how shiney you want it. These are all cans of spray paint. Also while you are there get a black permanent magic marker.
Step 5) Spray the faceplate and tray facade with the primer. Not too thick but a good even coat. THIS SHOULD BE DONE OUTSIDE AS PAINT FUMES ARE NOT SO GOOD FOR THE BRAIN! The primer is necessary as it will prevent the paint from flaking off your finished product. Flaking paint would be BAD.
Step 6) Let it dry overnight.
Step 7) Repeat steps 5 & 6. Two coats are good.
Step 8) Now spray it with the black paint using the same procedure as with the primer. Again two coats.
Step 9) Finally spray it with the cleat coat using the same procedure as above. The clear coat will make the drive good to the touch. If you don't use it, it will feel kind of like a chalkboard and be prone to getting stained.
Step 10) While that is drying take the black magic marker and hand color the little thumb wheel on the drive. Go slow and get in between each ridge. It should come out looking pretty good.
Step 11) Reassemble
Step 12) Start ballin' :bandit:
If all else fails - call Dell. They sell black components. ;)

For that Wal-Mart-shoppin' wife-beater wearin' look:
1) Get a black sharpie
2) Go to town on the faceplate
3) Kick back, pop open a Pabst Blue Ribbon, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

I painted my bezels...only to upgrade two of my three drives in only 6 weeks. Fun things to do...paint your bezel a different color (like gunmetal) and your tray and buttons the color of your case or a complementary color (like royal blue).

Not only do you get drunk off of the Pabst while painting, but you also get high from the smell of the sharpie. Most would consider this a win win situation.

Depending on your drive you may want to 1st eject the tray while in the bay. If its already out, hook power up to it and press eject. The front cover to the disk tray can than be lifted up. This way you dont have to force it or risk damaging it too much. After the tray cover is off than the rest of the face plate should come out easier. Just take a few seconds to look at how its latched.

yeah, on tray loaders it is recommended that you eject the tray before taking anything off, unless you want to spend 20+ minutes like me trying to find out why I couldn't fit the bezel out.
By the way, visit your local auto store and buy some vinyl dye, best thing ever to use for painting plastics.
