Does anyone know about the DVD-R DVD-RW DVD-RAM technology? I am just trying to do some research and currious if any of them would be worth purchasing. Any ideas?

*sigh* -- just when I had typed out a response for you, the G|A forum server choked. :(

Nonetheless, here goes:

What exactly are you wondering about DVD-R's and such? (ie, compatibility, differences between media, performance, etc.)

I recently wrote a little article over at Futurelooks about this very topic, so feel free to take a look there. (...and if posting a link to another tech site isn't allowed for some reason, feel free to send GAM after me).

Anyway, the article can be found Here (http://www.futurelooks.com/display.asp?i=117&p=1).

Feel free to ask questions and I'll see what I can do.

I think it is definitely worth buying a DVD-RW drive. However, right now the prices are pretty high for them. Its similar to the speeds of a CD-RW, only multiplyed by nine. For example, a 2X DVD-RW drive is equivalent to a 18X CD-RW. Keep in mind more data needs to be burned to the DVD disc, but overall the speed is good.

Burning a DVD at 1x generally takes an hour. Burning at 2x generally takes about 30 minutes. :)

Yes prices are still fairly high, but then I remember paying the same price for my Ricoh MP6200S (2x2x6) CD-Writer when it came out.

I am sure they will go down once more people get involved with selling them and then the market wont be held up by a few known companies.

I just hope this whole compatibility mess gets resolved, since that's another factor holding back the technology.

Nobody wants to buy into a product that won't be supported after all.

I keep on hearing from different people "in the biz" that there might be a standard out within the next few months, probably during summer :dodgy: don't quote me but pretty serious I think.

Well, let's see:

- Microsoft has announced their strong support for DVD+RW (not to mention companies like HP and Sony).

- Pioneer has just released their next-gen 2x DVD-R drive.

Doesn't seem like a standard will appear anytime soon in my opinion.

I'm going to imagine that Microsoft and Sony are going to have more clout than Pioneer. DVD-RW will rise to the top, in my humble opinion.

Microsoft/HP/Sony: DVD+R and DVD+RW
Pioneer: DVD-R and DVD-RW

Bear in mind Apple is also firmly behind DVD-R / DVD-RW -- and considering that the Mac is still often considered the platform of choice for DV, this could have some bearing.
