When Quake 3 Arena was released I had a 500 Mhz (Slot) Pentium 3 with a TNT2. I upgraded to a Geforce 2 GTS. Besides adding memory and such later on, The computer has not been upgraded.

I hate to toot my oun horn but when i upgraded the video card, I was one of the top tier players, in a top 10 clan and such. I took a hiatus from gamming for a several months.

I am now starting to play again, but find that I get visual laggs and such, and that people are able to do long range damage with simple weapons.

It is obvious the curve has changed since I have started.

My question is, what is the average or optimum Gamming rig for q3a now?

The upgrade in the video subsystem will be mute, since the cpu is only a slot 1 500, the faster cards do not scale well.

The Geforce 2 GTS runs Quake3 Arena comfortably at 1024x768x32. Turning down some of the eye candy or decreasing the resolution will alleviate visual lags.

With a faster cpu, a newer videocard will allow you to play at the higher resolutions like 1280x960 and 1600x1200. The average gaming rig for Quake 3 Arena online is likely a Geforce 3 and a 1Ghz+ cpu. The optimum gaming rig for Quake 3 now is GeForce 4 and Pentium 4 2.0A or Athlon XP 1.67 Ghz
