I've got a handy (maybe inaccurate, who knows) temperature reading software package that came with my asus a7v266-e mobo and it is reading my athlon xp 1700+ at 60/140 degrees C/F. That seems high to me but i have no comparison knowledge at all, just going on gut feeling. Can someone tell me if it, indeed is high? And if so, recommend something??? :) Thanks-
You mean Asus PC Probe? Thats been known to misread the temp on some boards.
60 degrees C is definitely too high.
Try Motherboard Monitor to monitor your temperatures http://mbm.livewiredev.com
If its still high, say over 45C, make sure the thermal compound was applied correctly. Other things to do would be: get a better cpu cooler. Having case fans will help circulate the air.

Lol. 60°F is freaking cold. 60°C, however, is hot. ;)

60 C under IDLE conditions are not good. Keep in mind that the Athlon XP is rated(from AMD) all the way up to 90 C as the upper boundary, so you are fine.
I recommend getting rid of a stock CPU fan ASAP!
Try the Volcano 7 from thermaltake(kinda noisy though)
Mine is 31 IDLE and 46 under 100% load over time.

Wanna bet RatBastard is using a delta fan. :heh:

Mine is idle @ around 39C but I haven't tried 100% load yet!

Right now my temp at idle is 37C with a Thunderbird 1.3. I'm using a copper heatsink from CompUSA (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product%5Fcode=288623&csearch=1). It wasn't working any better than the old heatsink so I replaced the fan with another fan I had from another heatsink. I then found out that I had the fan in the front of the computer blowing out instead of sucking in (Doh!). I may put the old fan in and see if it makes any difference.

It's so hot in SoCal today so I'm running @ 42C right now!

Nope.. just whatever comes defaulted on Volcano 7's...
When this baby is hot, its ramps up to 5400 RPMs.. its WAY TOO LOUD! Thinking of doing some kind of water cooling... no fans = no noise.. :)
Any try water cooling? Is it easy for a retard like me to install? :)
Rat.
