Hey peoples,
My friend just got a Hewlett Packard Pavilion zt1155 laptop today. I bought a PCI 10/100 ethernet card and a networking cable. Our network cards are not the same brand. He has a RealTek(built in) card and I have a Siemens SpeedStream 1020 10/100 card. I can't seem to get my desktop and his laptop connected. It says that a network cable is unplugged on both computers. He is running Windows XP Home Edition and I'm running Windows XP Professional. Can you please give me some advice on getting this set up correctly? We want to connect to the internet through my computer and basically share files between computers. I figured this was the best place to ask. Thanks guys.

Got|Hardware? Forum...always wanted to do that to someone else...anyway we are currently having that problem in school only its using Win98. It shouldnt be the networking cards themselves. At least we have gotten that far. I will check into it on XP off of my home computer and let you know if I find anything helpful.

you need a cross over cable
they are really easy to make, if you have a crimping tool

Is that all it will take to clear up the problem? We just made cross overs a few weeks ago. Takes less than 15 minutes if you make sure and have the wires all placed correctly.

Cross over cable? What is that? The cable I bought has RJ45 jacks on both ends. I thought you could just plug one end into each network card. Is this incorrect? Please let me know what to do. Thanks.

out of the 8 wires in there, you actually only use 4 of em...although all wires must be connected.
to make a cross-over out of a normal cable just switch pins 1&3 and 2&6
they should be in this order (for no cross over)
1. Orange / white
2. Orange
3. Green / White
4. Blue
5. Blue / White
6. Green
7. Brown / White
8. Brown
the end thats modded to be a cross over should be
1. Green / White
2. Green
3. Orange / white
4. Blue
5. Blue / White
6. Orange
7. Brown / White
8. Brown
so what has happened is the green and orange wires have switched positions. That way the transmit on one pc goes to the recieve on the other :)

No... it won't work that way.
In order to network two computers, you'll need either a hub in between the pcs, with a cable from each pc to the hub...
...or you'll need a crossover cable to connect the two pcs directly, if you want to connect without a hub.
A standard network cable connecting the two pcs will not work. You'll need to either purchase a crossover cable, or follow cruel's directions to make one.

With that crossover cable, you should now be able to connect the network card from one laptop directly to the network card of the other.

I hooked up the cable and ran the connection setup wizard on both computers that was on Windows XP, but it still doesn't work. I went to "My Network Places", and then to "View Workgroup Computers", my computer only saw it's own computer in the workgroup, but my friends laptop saw my computer as well as it's own. So we clicked on the icon that had my computers name on it and it came up with a message that said "\\Stealthfury is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the network administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions". "The network path was not found". What does all of that mean?
