Putting together a new box for the kids using spare parts. AMD Athlon Classic 950 (@ 997) on an Asus K7V m/b -- Yes, it's a Slot A (but 512kb of L2). Is there any benefit to 768MB of RAM over 512? I've got a third stick hanging around from the Fall XP bundle give-aways.

768 seems like overkill for most people. unless you run some crazy applications and dont use virtual memory.
what OS? i have 512mb, and under Win2k, on average i have about 320 MB Unused physical memory at any given time (discounting page file)
under windows XP, its usually about 260MB unused. If i'm using something crazy like photoshop or illustrator, or burning a CD, it will drop, but rarely rarely goes below 100MB unused physical, just because windows likes to drop everything to page files.
Good Luck. I'd stick with just 512
