Sony got the ball rolling Tuesday by cutting the U.S. price of its PlayStation 2 game console by one-third and dropping the price of its older PlayStation One by 50 percent. Effective immediately, the PS2 costs $199, down from $299, while the PSX now sells for $49, down from $99.

Can anyone guess how quickly Nintendo will drop the price of the Game Cube? My kids just bought one a week ago at Target. I think if Target drops the price within 30 days of your purchase, they will refund the difference.

for the same reason that microsoft is dropping prices (also to 199) on a product that costs them more than 350 bucks to make.

right, but they can't make money off royalities unless they can get a solid base of console owners who are demanding more games.

consequentely, they try to sell consoles cheap so that they can build market share and saturation, which will hopefully (from their perspective) drive up demand for games and (if their business model holds up) profits.

I dont see Nintendo having pressure to drop prices as much as microsoft. Nintendo is #2 in sales worldwide right now, so the pressure seems to be on microsoft. I imagine nintendo will wait for MS to drop, then they will.

I will make my own game system company and I will sell them for 10 cents each. Maybe that'll make prices go down even more, sho.gun... the savior of the gaming world.

No! They make it up in licensing of the games. It's the classic Gillette "Give away the razor, make money on the blades" model.

people, it's a JOKE! a very old joke, but a funny one none the less, about a retailer selling things at a loss, but that's ok, because he makes it up on volume :heh:
