View Full Version : Mountain Dew Doesn't Freeze

I accidentally left a can of Mountain Dew in the freezer for two days. I remembered it when I came home tonight and rushed to the freezer expecting an exploded can. Much to my surprise, it wasn't frozen. It was just really cold. Is there a reason it didn't freeze?

Bring it over... I'm sure I could freeze it

A can of MD will not explode in a consumer-grade freezer. :)

Is this your "Expert" opinion passwird? :D Hmm... Maybe it is time to get a new freezer... if the benchmark is freezing cans of soda.

Well, I wouldn't consider myself an expert in the field of soda can explosions, but I've left cans of Mountain Dew in my freezer for days at a time and they've never gone ka-blam-o.

i left a can of coke in my car overnight a while back, that thing exploded all over my dash and seats, and steering column and stuff...

oh sorry, this has nothing to do with MD

I remember this happened in my sister's car, but this was due to heat. She had a black car w/ black leather interior and it was probably 105+ degrees

heh.. i think my commercial-grade freezer would do the trick.. maybe u can turn ur freezer up a few notches? have you attempted to overclock it yet? dont think u'll have much a problem with overheating.. well, if u can't freeze a can of MD, then i guess overheating can be a problem..

I can't speak for regular Mountain Dew, but I know for a fact that Diet Mountain Dew can, and will, explode after freezing. Leaving a can in a -30 degree Farenheit vehicle results in quite the explosion, judging by the amount of frozen 'Dew and shrapnel it leaves all over the car! Not that it happened more than once...or twice...

i've made Mt Dew ice-cubes before... for those times you want your 2liter bottle Dew to be cold, but not watered down :)

hmmm lesse here

/* me puts on gloves, opens barrel with Liquid Nitrogen, puts can of MD in the barrel, takes it out */

You liar, it's frozen solid:argue:

Mountain Dew may not freeze, but Diet Pepsi will, and it makes one heck of a mess when it does! I just had one burst last week.

My sister left cans of diet coke in my trunk during the middle of winter over at Urbana-Champaign...

they exploded.

I put a can of Sprite in the freezer once.. it didn't exactly explode into pieces or anything. The top and bottom of the can expanded, making a half-spherical shape on each side. I thought it was pretty cool. Decided to drink it, but could'nt put it down after I opened it, cuz it'd just topple over.

freezing point of a water solution gets lower the more stuff you have dissolved in it... and mt dew has a lot of sugar ... and diet soda has very little dissolved in it...

Hey! We were trying to have an intellectual conversation about liquid and expansion and then you come here introducing us to a scientific explanation. psssh.

I just used a bunch of liquid nitrogen in my radiation lab this afternoon. After we finished our experiments, the professor said "okay...now you guys are authorized to use this stuff for non-authorized uses...so just have fun" (the stuff wqould've dissolved by the end of the day anyway). The best was when the guy next to me put a whole bunch of the stuff into a water bottle and dropped it right outside the window. Nothing happened at first, but five minutes later when none of us were paying attention...BOOM! It was easily louder than a .38 shot and scared the hell out of the people perusing the "Project Clothesline" shirts across the street. We're messing around with liquid N2 again next week (super-conductivity experiment), so maybe i'll freeze some Mountain Dew for you...

I tried freezing coke with liquid N2 once. Try it... you'll be surprised by what you get. ;)
