Girl gets £140 reward after handing in £9,000 she found

A 10-year-old girl in Oregon has received a £140 reward for handing in a bag she found with more than $15,000 inside.

Petra Noble was shopping in the town Medford with her mother Sandi when she spotted a bank bag in a supermarket trolley.

Petra says she thought it was 'cool' when she opened the bag and found bundles of $20, $50 and $100 notes.

The bag had been forgotten by Miranda Gomez-Castro after organising her colleagues' pay and was worried she would have to pay all the cash back.

Petra and her mother handed the cash in to police. Ms Gomez-Castro gave the girl the $200 reward.

Why do we keep seeing stories about this kind of stuff? For crying out loud, when you find money, you're supposed to give it back! I found an envelope with a driver's license and a huge wad of cash outside a bank a few years ago. I didn't bother to count it, but it was obviously hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. I just went into the bank, said "someone dropped this" and left. I didn't call the media or wait for a reward or anything. I just did what I was supposed to do.

When I was in college, I had just gotten back from home. My parents gave me some munnny for the coming semester (in cash). it was a lot..(you look at the folded wallet from the side, and you see how thick the cash was) I was going to go to the bank after class...but...errrmmmm, I lost my wallet in class.

a week later (must have been a long week for the dude who found it), contacted me, and gave me my wallet back...all the money inside was still there...
I gave him one of the bills in the wallet...

We keep hearing stories about this, because I think that the world is so messed up that when someone actually tries to teach their children morals and to be good citizens and stuff that it's so rare that it actually happens that people want to bring it out into the positive light. Well, atleast that's what I think :)

it's not wierd or newsworthy, it's allegory and showing that good deeds go rewarded. It's reinforcement. People complain about negative news, but you complain about positive news. Sheesh.

I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining about the positive news, I was just making an observation that these types of stories tend to make it sound unusual that people would actually return the money. Maybe I'm just in a mood today! :P

Several years ago my sons and I went to one of those weekend computer/flea market shows. My 8 year old dropped his 10 dollar bill (the only money he had). We went to the office and they announced it over the PA. Within minutes three people came up to him and offered him ten dollars. Obviously, only one actually found it! My son got a good lesson in generosity and selflessness that day.

If i found money i would keep it. That might be messed up but i dont care. I have lost stuff before and I have found stuff before. Its just the way it goes.

I agree with everything she just said. I do think it's kinda rare to have someone teach their kid morals and stuff. I mean...I worked at summer camp and those kids...man...some of them I wonder what their parents were teaching them! Sheesh....yeah...so I do think that this is kinda of a rare thing for a kid to do.

but 15k...that might have made me think twice.

and if i did decide to return it..i would prolly bring it home and roll around in it first :D

Depends where I found it. If I found it in a bank, or store parking lot I would definitly return it. If I found it in the woods, or on the beach, that peice is mine.

Well, figuring that I have been to Medford a number of times (my fiance is from there), I can say that is actually kind of suprising. In that area a $50,000 annual salary is actually high, so to hand back $15,000 must have been hard.

Now I am not ripping on Medford, its an ok town...but has a lot of hicks from my perspective. Its one of those towns were alot of people never get out.

To show how back water it really is, my fiances best friend is a teacher there. She has told us that parents night is very interesting because there is a lot of "inbreeding." There are parents who are related (first cousins) and apparently there is such a tangled web of paternity that she has 4 sisters all the same age who have siblings who are related to other people in the class. (I dont think I am explaining that quite right, but you get the drift.)

yeah. i don't know. if i was in the middle of bfe and found that much cash......i'd have a hard time turning it in to the appropriate authorities.

i might just run a classified ad and see if anyone could tell me exactly where i found it......and if no one answered, i might just have to keep it.

but at the same time, i know how bad it sucks to lose stuff (although i've never lost $15k) and i wouldn't really want someone to go through that misery b/c i was greedy

I once got a 5 spot someone dropped, but it was a 7-11 parking lot and it dropped as they were getting into their car and they drove away before i walked over there. I was like 10 and considering my $2 a week allowance then, that was a boon.
