When I play a dvd movie I get the message in windows media player that says it cannot play the dvd because a compatible dvd decoder is not installed? I have a pioneer dvd rom ATAPI. Does anyone have this dvd drive and can tell me what to do? I did not get a cd with my drive because I bought the drive bare bones and the on their website I couldn’t find any decoder or anything to download to help me play dvds. The only change I have made to my computer is that I uninstalled my ATI radeon 7500 video card and then reinstalled it and now I can’t plays dvds. Please help. Thanks.

Do you have any other DVD playback software? Maybe try that?

i already reinstalled powerdvd xp and still doesn't work. when i try to play a dvd through powerdvd it just says:
" the current display mode is not supported. PowerDVD does not support the current display mode (DDraw Overlay mode is recommended)."
what does this mean? right now I have my video drivers that came on the cd for my ATI radeon 7500 installed. I tried updating the drivers but the computer hangs everytime. is there some trick to update drivers? My ATI radeon is a "powererd by ATI radeon card" so i went to ati.com and got the "powered by ati" drivers there installed them and computer hangs so now im using original radeon 7500 drivers.
Its looking like there is something seriously wrong with the computer or OS installation. Perhaps a reinstall is needed and lets see what the result is.

i fixed my cd drives so they work fine now. only problem i have now is my dvds just wont play. they are recognized in the drives, just wont play.
Was the recycle bin problem fixed bhome83?
------
The DVD playback software problem is related to the drivers being fubared from before. ATI comes with its own dvd player.

no, still got recycle bin problem, but not worried about that compared to problem i have now. Im not planning on reinstalling my whole OS because i know there has to be a solution to this problem. Can someone give me step by step on how to install new video drivers? Im trying to install the reference drivers from the ATI site but each time i install them my computer hangs.

Did you make sure to uninstall the current/previous drivers so you are starting with a clean slate?

I had the error for a while that the DVD was not in the drive. I ran a scandisk/defrag and it worked after that for some reason.

I fixed the problem. I downloaded a bad reference driver from ati.com (7.68 version). Doesn't make sense though why this version leaves my computer hanging. so instead i downloaded 7.60 reference driver and my computer didn't hang and now my dvds play. And you wanted me to reformat? C'mon! :) I only do that as an absolute last resort.

I've never had problems with ATI and DVDs. Granted, I don't get the FPS of NVidia cards, but I care more about DVD playback than games.

Darth explains how to check on Serious Sam and Jedi Outcast in his latest review. Other than that, I'm not really sure. Mad Onion's 3D mark2001se has some demos that will run and register the FPS as well.

 Both of my Ati cards work fine with a SoundBlaster Live! Value, but I guess I'll have to watch my step next time when buying a sound card... :hmm:
