never have had a dvd player so have no idea what are the good ones out there. I got a mitsubish (I think 27") and is about 10 years old. So progressive scan dvd players only work on hdtv's right? if so then i need a dvd player that is not progressive scan. I mainly want to focus on dvd quality rather than all the extra stuff on a player. I want the player to play regular cd's too though. any help would be appreciated. memorial day weekend is coming up and I was hoping of catching a deal on a good player then. Thanks.

progressive scan dvd players will work with all tvs, but you will only see the benifits of it on a progressive scan tv. most, if not all, dvd players will play music cds. whats you budget?

to clarify, I think progressive scan tv's are hdtv's, right?

budget is around $150-$200. So I would say im looking for a fairly good dvd player. Just want it to be compatible with all dvds (seen some people complain about some dvds don't work on certain players) and all dvds play good. i guess these are general statements about all dvd players but im NOT looking for a crappy $75 one that i have seen before. want it to last a while. any suggestions on good brands, or anything else i should know, would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are looking for an all around good player go with a Toshiba SD3755. It is a five disc changer, progressive scan, and plays MP3 cd's. Currently you can get this player in Goodguys B&M for $229.

If your TV has component video inputs then a progressive scan DVD player will deliver a sharper picture, but dont confuse this with actually giving you the sharpest picture that you would find with a true progressive scan capable television.

The Toshiba players are good dvd players, not the best, but good players none-the-less.

i would recommend 2:

if you think you'll be sticking with your current TV for awhile, get the panasonic rv-31k. excellent player, can be had for around $120 (that's what i paid for it at amazon a few months ago).

if you think you may want to upgrade to a progressive scan tv in the next couple years, then go for the panasonic rp-56. it is rated as one of the highest-quality progressive scan players in the under-$1000 category. i paid $177.50 for it on ebay (auction from vanns.com).

that's my 2 cents.

Excellent suggestions. If you wait, the RP62, which will replace the RP56, will be available soon at only a few dollars more (same retail price).
