i just got gta3 and i have windows xp and a nvidia graphics card...
The damn game freezes in menu and so i cant play the p.o.s!
im so pissed i just spent the last 5 hours trying different updates
and it still doesnt work. :mad:

anybody have the same problem.. or now how to fix this please help!

What do you mean it freezes?? I had a problem where the text in the menus did not appear (only as blocks).

There is a link to a file that you need to download from Microsoft listed in the readme file for XP users.

its just freezes then restarts <and when i say restarts, i mean my compouter restarts>... i did do the download and reboot.. nothing seemed to change. It still freezes!

Also read the readme. If your using xp and a geforce card it tells you how to fix it.

Have you tried downloading the latest official DirectX 8.1 release from Microsoft's website rather than using the version on the GTA3 disc?

I have done the download that they recomended. but im not to shure if that also updates directx 8.1. anyways im still having the problem after doing the download!

have you tried running in compatabilty mode? try 98, 2000 see if they work

Both my machines are XP with Nvidia chips (GF3 and GF2). My main one with the GF3 worked with no problems at all. My other system with the GF2 had the problems with the letters not appearing in the menus, but was fixed with the download.

Haven't heard of the peorblems you are having. All other games run fine?

yes, all my other games are running fine... ive been trying daily now and alls i can get is a menu or if im lucky into the game then it will freeze! im so pissed. ive done all the downloads and updates yet the same problem occurs... im going to try running the game in win98 form through xp like JPR said!

I looked in alot of places found that there is a directx 9 beta im going to try and download it but its hard to find. i hope that fixes the problem

actually ive already tried DX9 beta, i had to register with them for the beta program. i forgot the site though, looks like they changed the site up and made it harder to find. still cant find anything saying that there is an update for dx8.1 for xp

look for versions of dx8.1 5.1.2600.15 and 5.1.2600.29, those are the newer ones that were released after winxp cd
