I would think that they are...

Oh, and xsiled, considering that Newegg has Duron 900's for $35 with free shipping, I think that's a little over-priced! :heh:

ya but durons burn if you take off the heat sink :) last time i checked you can get away with a p1 cooler(passive)on cyrix :P

The last Cyrix CPU I had was an MII-300. It actually ran at 266MHZ, but they claimed it ran like a 300MHZ chip. Unlike AMD chips, this was just a fantasy figure they came up with for marketing. I don't think I'd ever buy another Cyrix chip.

As for passive cooling, I'm so used to fan noise I hardly notice it anymore. If you choose your fans correctly, your PC can be relatively quiet.

From my experience, Cyrix chips are VERY fast as long as there is no real load on them. In other words, if you are just running basic programming, i.e. word processoring, IE, etc., a Cyrix processor will be faster and more responsive than either AMD or Intel processors. Unfortunately, the moment you put any kind of real load on the CPU, :2far: .

I had to laugh when I saw the subject - IS there a 'latest' Cyrix processor?

Yeah, there is a 900 or 933 MHz version. I think it uses a socket 370 mobo. They do have their advantages, though: low power usage, and optional passive cooling.

i'm planning on using a cyrix chip on the car mp3 player i'll one day build. The VIA Eden platform has them soldered in place already, great all in one thing as it comes with usb, integrated vid, sound, LAN, etc. It's tiny too...

bah, sorry OC for going 3 miles away from the original topic.

Does anyone know how well the lastest cyrix cpu's handle video playback, particularly divx and dvd? I was thinking about using a cyrix cpu with one of those new tiny shuttle systems to hook up to the tv, but I want to be sure that the CPU will be strong enough. In reviews, there never seems to be any mention on how well they handle divx, so that is my main concern.

I just read a review of one of them on some website. I forget the name of the site. Anyways, the scored really low when running 3Dmark 2001 (they scored like 158). They also showed some Sandra benchmarks and they scored real low on those too. The memory bench was well below std PC133 even though they were using pc133. They said that its about the equivilant to a pentium 233.

If you were to get one, pick up a cheap PCI DVD decoder with ir capabilities. I think the hollywood plus will work. This way you can use a remote with it. You would then have to use the built in soundcard.

Which Cyrix is this? Remember, Cyrix also made processors up to 600 or so MHz, and those would operate around pr 233 or so...

I think the newer Cyrix processors--900MHz +--should fair quite a bit better.
