Just a warning.
My paypal and Hotmail accounts were hacked today. Someone attempted to sign on, and send themselves $3500 in a variety of transactions.
As of today, an email from
[email protected] is NOT from me, and should be ignored or reported.
I'm not currently working on any deals with anyone, so if you get an email from
[email protected], it's not from me!
Thanks. :(

are you being held liable, or is there something that protects ya from it?

They tried two transactions. One on a credit card for $2000, and one from my checking for $1500.
The credit card transaction was denied, because I use a small, low balance card (for exactly this reason) for paypal and web orders. Had he been a little less greedy, he might have gotten something.
The Checking transfer would have gone through... and started to. But I noticed it in time, and put a stop on my account at my credit union, and also contacted Paypal to have it cancelled/reversed.
At this point, it doesn't look like it'll cost me anything.
I'd probably have been ok with the credit card... they'd cover me except for a small portion.
I'd have taken it in the shorts on the Checking account transfer if I hadn't noticed it. No protection there. As soon as this is all cleared up, I'm closing down the paypal account. I guess I'll give up selling and trading online, at least if it involves money transfers.
Guess I can count my blessings that I caught it in time...

Were your hotmail and paypal passwords the same?
My paypal password is a real random string of numbers and letters...someone would have to actually hack paypal to get it...
good luck

Yep. They were the same. The accounts were several years old, and still had the original passwords from way back before I was a paranoid person.
My newer accounts all use better, more difficult passwords... I just neglected those because I'd had them so long.
Live and learn. They're different now, and much more cryptic.

That sucks man. I had somebody get my creditcard number before, and they ordered some crap online. It was only 30 bucks worth of stuff, but I hgad to fill out paperwork for citibank, and wait seemingly forever to get the money recreditted to my account, as well as getting a whole new card. Just a royal PITA.

At least when someone got my citibank number, they had the decency to order several thousand dollars of stuff and make my trouble worthwhile. :hehehmm:
