i have an old compaq presario 5020 which has a slot1 pentium celeron 333. its getting a little slow for my sisters and now they want something faster. it has a 15gig hd and 256mb or 512mb of ram, so all if i can, id like to upgrade the cpu only to cut costs. anyone know if there is i can up it to a slot1 p3 or a faster celly?

You need to find out if the board supports 1.65 V and 133 MHz. If not, you will be limitted to the slower Pentium II's. Compaq has a history of user krappy hardware, but you may get lucky. If it doesn't support coppermines, then get a PIII-450 on ebay. If it does, the 700 and 800's are really cheap.

I have a P3 700 coppermine and I'm happy with it. If you upgrade that and get pc133 ram , you should be happy.

gotta agree with you on compaqs hardware bires, it does suck. i have a coppermine p3 866 in my box right now. what would happen if i put it in there and that mobo doesnt support it, will i fry my chip or will it just not work? im not sure if it will support coppermine though, it is 3 years old at least. it only has 2 ram slots and i filled those a few months ago in an attempt to speed up the system.

shouldn't fry your cpu. I have a test 667 CuMine that I use to test PII boards to see if they support the chip. Numerous boards...and the cpu still works fine. Only about 1 in 8 boards support the cpu...asus mostly.
