Well I have mentioned before that I have this system that I built which has effectively managed to kill itself twice and does all of these freaky things to itself. Well today, it decided to learn a new trick.
So I go to log on (woe is me, I am using dialup) on my laptop and I get this wonderful sound. Its not someone talking. Its not an incoming fax. Its not a connected modem. Its just this relatively high pitched repeating sound, the likes of which I have never heard. I go downstairs, no one is on the "possessed" computer. I look at the ready light on the line, and it shows that it is raring to go, so I just figure I must have been imaging things.
I decided to eat lunch and while I am making it, I noticed that there is someone supposedly on that line. I look around and no one is on the computer again. I then go on a mission, searching every single outlet where that line is used. All of the phones are dead, and if there is a computer or other device, I disconnect it and reconnect it again. Still no joy. I finally go to the haunted machine...sure enough, its not online. There is nothing indicating that it is sending or receiving any data and no automatic updates were going on. Just to be on the safe side, I shut it down. Sure enough, the line comes back to life.
So, now the question is, what could have occurred. I really dont get how it could be creating such a racket without being connected. Furthermore, if its not autodialing or connecting, what could be the cause of the noise. Anyone have any ideas?
I think I need to destroy that machine....its seriously focked.
