i'm planning on getting a p4 board, an asus one. my question is which chipset is better? i've heard VIA is good but that's mostly for amd, right? so i guess for the p4, it's either gonna be SiS or intel chipset.
thanks in advance.

thanks for that useful response.
i totally prefer ddr but i forgot to say that i'd like raid as well.
i've been looking at the asus p4b533-e only because it's got raid. i can't believe there's SO many boards.

thanks again.

well, Abit makes an intel based board the BD7II-R that has RAID and supports the new 533Mhz bus CPUs. Put in a northwood 2.26Ghz and a good fan and you should be able to overclock to near 3ghz. I've seen people do that on air cooling with such a setup.

in your opinion, how's the comparable stability between abit and asus?
i've had great experiences with asus but i've never owned an abit before.

before i am able to make one decision, you give me more info and make it even longer before i'll be able to get this. :)
ah, the disadvantages of NOT being knowledgeable.

i use the msi ultra645 333 and it ran very stable at just over 2.3ghz(modding my system right now). The only problem w/this board is the voltage settings. You have to tie/short some pins to get the extra voltage if you need it(you might not).
The overclocking board that seems to be getting the most attention currently is the ASUS P4B533 . I'm thinking of getting one myself. 1.6a seems to thrive on that board but your mileage will vary.
good luck

ps: be sure to get some good memory 2700+ddr.
Both Asus and Abit are two good motherboard makers. I've had motherboards from both that have worked well.
Right now I'm using an Asus P4B266-C {Intel 845D chipset} which is a very nice motherboard. If I was getting a motherboard now I would get SiS 645DX or 845E based one.
The difference between Intels 845D and 845E chipsets is the 845E has official support for 533Mhz fsb. Intel is set to launch DDR333-based 845PE and 845GE chipsets in September.
As for good ram get Corsair or Samsung.

I'm pretty happy with my ABit IT7 mainboard, although I realize the legacy-free nature isn't a viable solution for everyone. It's happily running my 1.6A at 2.4GHz (default voltage) to 2.66GHz (1.7v) with perfect stability, and has lots of options for me to tweak performance further. :)
...and yes, these comments are coming from a former ASUS user. Nothing's wrong with ASUS, but they just didn't offer the features I wanted (onboard USB 2.0, Firewire, & LAN).

jesus, you've got your 1.6a to 2.4? i'm looking to get a 2.0a but are you milking it for everything its got to reach 2.4 or is that pretty standard today?
wow.

oh yeah, and if i were to overclock the 2.0a, how much of an increase can i expect to see with an asus p4b533-3 with samsung 2700 ddr?

I'm pretty sure that you'd have no problem getting to 2.4GHz -- even at default voltage (like me). I'm using the stock heatsink/fan too, and there's certainly nothing fancy about my cooling setup.

the 1.6A was made for the 100Mhz BUS just move it to 133mhz bus and you have 2.4ghz with NO OVERCLOCKING OF THE MOBO! :-P wow...

wonder how my BD7II with 2.26ghz P4 (533FSB) will do wih 2 sticks of 256MB PC2700 Samsung memory!
What do you think I can get it to?
