After posting a thread recently about how burning is related to CPU size, I found some other information that stated that my Pentium II 450 should be able to burn at speeds greater than 8-10X.
Well, I saw a good deal on a 24X Yamaha burner, and decided to try it out with my Plextor SCSI 14/32 reader, direct burning.
I figured that the direct burn process would work at 12X, since the slowest speed of the 14/32 is 14X. It worked. So I figured... let's try 16X. I couldn't believe it.. It still worked. It must be the buffer underrun protection that makes it possible. Oh, by the way, I used Nero... I am really starting to like that program!
The audio CD that I burned was only approx. 500 MB and it took a little over 3-1/2 minutes.

i agree nero is a great product. what exactly is direct burning and how is it different than what you were doing before?

Direct burning goes from the reader to the writer at the same time, i.e. the CDROM is spinning at the same time as the CDRW.

/me does the from a Lite-On 40x to a Plextor 16x
the fastest I can do it with out to many under runs is 8x
but that is the fastest I will copy music
I will try a data CD, that should be able to go @ 16x fine ;)

The CD that I copied at 12X and 16X was a Stevie Wonder audio. I listened to it and there are no problems

Very good. Now go turn yourself in to the RIAA.

Isn't direct burning the same thing as "On the Fly" burning? I've copied CD's with my Lite-on 24x at 24x and they work just fine. I guess it helps that they're each master on separate IDE buses.

both works fine, but I've noticed that if I use crappy CD-Rs (the ones that have no name and the stuff peels really easily) the songs often skips in the CD-player. The better CD medias don't do that though and I can copy fine with 24x.
