Also posted this in 'need deals', but thought that asking here might be effective too. So I'm wondering what kind of spec's I'm to look for when shopping for a descrambler, and where can I find some deals?

Ordered basic 13 channel for $15/month, but when the service dude came out and hooked up cable, the high channel filter made the picture staticy, so he left it off, and now I have 100 channels for $15. All I need is to descramble them movie channels!

Thanks

i have a friend with one. he bought it online. they problem with online sales is you are essentially buying an illegal device, unless you are using it for education, so if they rip you off, you cant report them. What will you tell the authorities, "I was buying this to steal cable and they stole from me" Theres nothing you could do unless you were a school that was going to deponstrate how electronis filtering and phase shifting works.

I guess they have hacks for motorola boxes that allow you to get the signals to clear up. Problem is that motorola has built in the technology to recognize any tampering and it disables the box when a certain signal is sent by the cable provider. Comcast did that in detroit and had 100's of people that had useless boxes. 17 people who had bad boxes were then sued for 170,000 by comcast. Others who responded to letters sent or brought their boxes in were told not to do it again

Ok, the reason they can sell the boxes is that owning the box (and selling it) is not illegal. You can legally own and use the box to get your cable but here is the rub. You can only legally use it to watch the channels you pay for.

Thus, the second that you tune into watch "naughty nymphs of neptune" on the hustler network when you didnt pay for it....you have violated the law and can be found guilty. Most cable companies send signals that will fry your box and they can also detect it...so it can be very dangerous to use one.

You have to get a box that is specific to your area...thus if your cable company uses GE equipment or Jerrold equipment you need a box that is recognized as that type. Then you call the company that sells the descramblers, tell them what kind of box you need, and then they match you.

There are some companies whereby you order a box from your cable company and they mod it for you to make it into a descrambler.
