View Full Version : Are the AMD CPUs/Mobos more power hungry than P4s?

I was pricing out the P4 1.6As and AMD1700+s. I was wondering if a 300W PS would do with either setup, with three 7200 RPM HDs, three CDs, and two 120mm fans.

I not 100% sure but I don't think a 300w PS would be enough for either system. I think AMD recommends at least 350w for it's xp processors and with 3 HD's and 3 cd's I think it would be best to use at least a 400w.

yeah it's just 300 that amd recommends, but w/3cd's and 3drives you might want a little more, but it couldn't hurt to try it with a 300. Some of these kids think that you need massive amounts of power, when it's just not true.

It would probably run, but yeah, you'll probably want more. I've known people to run T-Birds on a 250 watt P/S, and systems like you described on 300 watt P/S... but, just like in OC'ing, your mileage may vary. I couldn't even get my Duron 750 to post with a 250 watt power supply. I'd say, go with atleast a 350, but with the prices the way they are, you could even go with a 400+ watt P/S....

I think I'll be looking for deals on 350s.

Wow...the little woman gave me the OK to upgrade. I picked up a P4 1.6A, MSI 845 Ultra UAR, and Allied 350W (ball bearing) PS for $236 shipped from www.newegg.com. The PS was $34 shipped.

Newegg has been the first place that I go to price out comp stuff. Lately, it has been the last place I have to go to get good prices.
