Regarding the CompGeeks deal for the 3Com cable modem, the Deals page sez:

It`s a pretty standard cable modem except with a USB plug. If you`re not into USB, it also has an ethernet port. Also, those with Cox High Speed Cable and AT&T Broadband need not apply. I don`t believe it`s compatible

According to the reader feedback on Amazon (who also sells this modem for $49.99 AR), it *is* compatible with many but not all Cox and ATTBI services. Check this out:linky (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/electronics/B00005RG4N/customer-reviews/qid=1025105798/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/ref=cm_cr_dp_2_1/002-6157686-1437641).

I have ATTBI in the Chicago suburbs and this modem worked fine right away. I had to surf to the regional ATTBI site to provision it, but after it registered on the network, it worked perfectly.

Two caveats: (1) 3Com does not support this modem. At all. So you're on your own. Period. (2) A lot of people on Amazon said that the USB port on their modem doesn't work. Figure on using the Ethernet port if you get this unit (which is how I did mine).

One further note: it looks like the same outfit is handling the rebates for this modem at CompGeeks and Amazon. I sent my rebate form in on 2/1/02; according to wheresmyrebate.com, they *just* processed it. I have not seen the check yet.
