View Full Version : New MS "security patch" gives MS free reign over your computer
http://bsdvault.net/article.php?sid=527&mode=&order=0
From the EULA:
" * Digital Rights Management (Security). You agree that in order to protect the integrity of content and software protected by digital rights management ("Secure Content"), Microsoft may provide security related updates to the OS Components that will be automatically downloaded onto your computer. These security related updates may disable your ability to copy and/or play Secure Content and use other software on your computer. If we provide such a security update, we will use reasonable efforts to post notices on a web site explaining the update. "
Ugh....

Linux, Apple and BSD converts, please form a line on the right.
Windows users, please prepare for the cavity search you agreed to by clicking through the EULA.

It doesn't just apply to 6.4, and it doesn't just apply to NT.
It's across the board.
If you want the new, more secure software, you have to agree to the EULA.
If you don't want to agree to the EULA, you have to stick with the old, less secure software.
I like the part where they can update your software to add digital rights management, without telling you, and disable programs that you've potentially paid for.

I thought that link from MS that I posted said all that, in much more formal wording.
"Customers using Microsoft® Windows Media™ Player 6.4, 7.1 or Windows Media Player for Windows XP. "
Read:Everyone who uses Windows.

sorry for all of you windows users. I personally think that its bull the way that MS is forcing its EULA on you guys. You should have secured software since you did pay for it. M$ should be responsible for its software and not use these tactics to force new EULAS on you.
As for using media player on NT, who still uses NT? You have to go at least to 2k.

My work does because they paid for the license's and figured if they can use those systems easily with the 2k systems there was no reason to upgrade everything to 2k.

Yep. They do where I work as well.
2K has steeper hardware requirements, and in addition to the licensing fees, they would have to make a huge hardware investment to upgrade all their pcs to Win2K.
It's a hospital, so they can do that, but you'll just pay for it in your medical bills and health insurance.
Instead, as of next month, they'll begin purchasing PCs with Win2K, but it'll be 3+ years before all the NT hardware is phased out and replaced.

You. You're hugging your computer... it's an object. Normally we don't hug objects... unless their teddy bears. Is your computer soft like a teddy bear?
