good online pc game

i've got this pc at work...i don't do much here, so i need some way to occupy my time. what is a good, addicting, internet-based multiplayer pc game i can play. if i have to download something, that is fine, but i prefer any software to be free (or < $20). i used to play a little on MUD, is that still around? the only game i ever play now is escape velocity, but it is only for the Mac, so i cannot play it here.

yeah i sort of just sit here and play on my computer until something goes wrong with network/systems. many days nothing goes wrong. i guess the better job i do as the sys admin, the less work i do... no, i don't want yahoo games. i want some kind of rpg i think.

muds still exist. you can also search for some internet-BBS's.. with the games such as LORDS (Legend of the red dragon), or BRE (Barren Realms Elite), Usurper, etc... the good ol' games.. pretty fun.. or www.lemonadegame.com or www.shockwave.com or www.zone.com

How about counter-strike? You would need to buy Half-Life then d/l CS and a few HL updates but no biggie

there is that one that was posted by someone whom i forget...it's fun for a lil bit

and you could go to download.com and dl some of those games...like Scorch! remember that game? it was the best with the tanks and stuff :D
