There is a way to delete the ads through AIM itself without an outside program.

i use aim+ (http://www.big-o-software.com/)

Gets rid of the ads and keeps a log of your conversations.

I have never had ads on my AIM. I don't even have AOL, but when I went to a local ISP, my computer wouldn't let me fully delete AOL, and AIM stayed, too. I must have an old version, because I don't know what you guys are talking about.
