UEBERLINGEN, Germany (CNN) -- At least 71 people -- including about 50 children -- are feared to have been killed after a Russian jetliner and a cargo plane collided in midair over southern Germany.
DANG. :(
wow 50 kids. Last I read it was when it had just happened, they said that they thought not many people had died because it was mainly cargo......50 kids dead......they need to investigate this ****.

Geez la weez...you have a vast amount of x, y, and z axis to fly around in...they had to choose that same corrdinate vector to fly in at the same time...gee, if you think about it...what are the odds!!!

well, i'm guessing its obvious that the cargo plane was carrynig mainly cargo. but the russian jetliner.. eh.. still a rather high ratio of children to adults if ya ask me.. is it just me or are these airplane accidents occuring more often.. or are we just more aware of it now?

gotta find who did what wrong in order for it not to happen again... btw it wasn't the russians they recieved a command to desend 50 second before the collision at the same time the other plane descended as well

Swiss air traffic controllers say they told the Russian pilot three times to descend, but when he eventually did it was too late. Meanwhile, a Russian airport spokesman suggested it could have been the other pilot's fault.
"If only they had flown on time, nothing would have happened,"
But Sergei Rudakov, the head of Domodedovo airport, denied that the Russian pilot -- who he described as very experienced -- caused the collision, and he suggested to RTR television that perhaps the other plane's pilot was at fault.
Anton Maag, chief of the air traffic control tower in Zurich, said the Russian plane only began to decrease altitude after a third request by a "very experienced" controller. At the same time, the DHL plane's automatic collision warning system inexplicably issued an order to descend.
You find out what's wrong by reviewing the data and examining the wreckage. This is a bunch of people trying to cover their respective rears.

wow...
I think more will happen only because the air is getting crowded...

You ever consider the cargo they were carrying was kids? I mean honastly. Do you know where they come from? My parents told me the stork, but I don't believe that. I think they ordered me from russia, just like my friend ordered his wife from russia. But since it was a cargo plan, i wonder if they put the kids in crates. they would probably have to put air holes in it and some way to eat.

maybe....but what is really needed is more advanced air traffic control systems. the current technology is decades old and is from a time when the skies weren't nearly as crowded.
with more advanced on-plane control systems, situations like this could be avoided before they even come close to becoming collisions.

indeed.. everything should be updated.. BUT.. lets see.. where are we gonna pay for it? as it is, people don't wanna pay for fare hikes.. airline industries are losing money.. not 'nuf people flying.. etc.. and its not just the U.S. that needs to update.. because these crashes have been occuring all over the world..

yeah, i realize it's far-fetched, especially right now. i mean, upgrades have been stalled for years due to lack of funds, and now with the huge amount of $$ needed to improve security, the money is just NOT going to be there.
another major problem is the air traffic controllers union. since many of the proposed new technologies would actually give the pilots more on-board information and allow them to do much of the "control" themselves, the union is extremely opposed to it (they're afraid of job losses)
