um, i have the following question:
What are the benifits of using a thermal gel/greese when installing cpu fan. What quantities are need to be used.
Also if i plan to switch heatsink in future, should i somehow clean out get before setting up a new fan?
If you could point some kind of article i'll be thankful.
Well any kind of reply is welcome.
Thanks,
fire

sorry your question is being overlooked. Thermal paste allows for better thermal transfer from the CPU to the heatsink. Use very little when applying it. Too much will actually slow the thermal transfer.
to clean, use wd-40. I use it carefully and dry it completely before i put the cpu back in. I think I got that dvice from artic silver
as for a recommended paste, I would use artic silver. its kinda pricy, but it works

I would stay away from WD-40 as it's oil based. try something like pant thinner or alcohol.

I always just put a glob on the core... not to big, let the HS spread it out...
Fingernail polish works okay to get thermal paste off... but I think alcohol is better.

here you go. http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_alumina_instructions.htm
I stand corrected. WD-40 to clean up the ceramic. Thats what I used it for, since the paste was on the ceramic. They give a list of cleaners they rcommend

I hope you mean fingernail polish remover!
My preferance is alcohol as well. I keep a bottle of 90% isoprophyl in my computer desk for such purposes.
The recommendation I have seen for applying thermal paste (arctic silver is my preferance as well) is to put a small dab on the core, then use a flat edge (such as a business card or credit card) to spread it out thin. Then apply the heatsink.
