I'm linking to a dirctory share on a remote system through a Cisco client VPN. I can see the first 4 levels of directories but then it times out trying to display the next level, which has a lot of files. Also, having a similar problem with SQL Server 2000 looking at the database list in the database node of a VPN connected server. It displays a "no items" message instead of the databases. Anyone have some info on this problem?

Sounds like you either need to increase the timeout, or you may be running into a permission problem - are you sure you have rights to those directories remotely?

I do have permissions - checked with the administrator - he checked into my idle time setting which is one day - he has no other ideas yet. Someone said there's no time out options and I have to live with it. I do have Norton Personal Firewall on my Win 2000 server, but with that off it makes no difference.

I find it hard to believe that a Cisco VPN wouldn't have a timeout setting. Sounds to me like whoever is administering it either doesn't know what they're doing or they don't want to bother with you - pulling a file listing from a remote computer can take a long time if there are a lot of files.

The only other thing I can think of is if your directory name is too long - some apps have a limit on the number of characters in the directory name, so if you're connecting to C:\last year estimated budget numbers\northeast region of midwest operations\unallocated and or underestimated funds\pressed hampster budget\, that may also cause a problem.

Maybe try posting in comp.dcom.sys.cisco
