So after spending half of my 4th of July just sitting around doing nothing, I decided to stick a window on my DVD drive. THe drive is a slot-load pioneer 16x with a silver painted bezel. I then busted out my trusty ol dremel and started chopping, then glued a thin plexiglass on the bottom. I had nothing to use as a trim, but I think it looks fine without one.

Then I figure why not just stick a LED inside while we're at it... so while wiring one up I thought again, why not stick 2 in there while we're at it. To power the leds, i just took 5V from the bottom of the board where all the electronic parts are.

My cam sucks, the light is much more spread and even if you look at it in real life. But hey, here it is.

might want to photoshop those images down to a smaller size.

did you wire a load to those LEDs? The 5V will blow make em pop before long unless you drop the voltage down some. a 10K in series will work for each LED.

Otherwise its pretty cool

That is the biggest DVD drive I've ever seen! :2far:

Nice job sho.gun! :thumb:

I resized em :)

Each led is paired with an 180 ohm resistor so it should be fine, the resistor drops the 5v into 1.6 or something. Btw what's a load?

Nice work sho.gun!

You got da skillz and da boredom to go through with things. heh. I see your 4th was just as entertaining as mine. I spent all day drawing and pining over my ex. :P

I also went down and saw Dopey and Pinkgirl and Dopey's kids. We went to McDonald's and the park.

sorry, a load is a form of resistance used in an electronic circuit. A load will reduce the voltage to keep from destroying the dvices wired into the circuit. A resistor is the load used in this circuit

nice work, now put it in the top drive and and cut the case to show it off.

hehe yeah actually, when you put a CD in you can see the laser turn on really bright... but afterwards when the CD is spinning fast you can't see it anymore.

but when a DVD is playing, you should be able to see it the whole time....

lets see...most leds drop about 1.7-2.1V so we are looking at lets say 3V across the resistor. A 10K resistor would allow .3ma to flow through the series combo (V=IR). Most LEDs are brightest between 10-20ma. Wouldnt recommend the 10k...more like 200 ohm or less

thats a sweet mod sho. youve just motivated me to do some case mods as soon as i get a dremel;)
