i like aggressive street skating. i wear kneepads and a wristguard on my left wrist. always happy i wear them. but for normal skating, i wouldn't worry about anything. the knee pads make your knees and sweaty and everything. just real uncomfy.

I used to rollerblade a lot. My favorite type was downhill rollerblading. Haven't done any recently though, partly because no time and partly because no money to keep buying wheels. Personally, I don't like or use pads/helmets because they feel bulky and get in the way of my movement. However, I've also scratched myself up pretty bad a bunch of times. If you're going to go without pads, be prepared to be scarred. It's not a matter of if, but when. Have fun. :)

If you are a decent skater then I would not worry about pads. If you are a rookie then I say use the wrist gaurds. Knee pads and the rest are nice but wrist injuries are the most common. And wrist pads look the least dorky.

When I skate I don't use pads, but then I'm just a numbskull out cruising around.

i have the gear but never wear it. A couple years ago i was going down a hill, the street was called "Kill Borne", and it's a long steep road with alot of curves, i only went down this hill to see how fast i could go (top speed 43mph baby!!!), then one day a pebble got stuff between my wheels...well, i ended up all cut up and i shifted my left kneecap, had a brace for a while and no blading for a long time, my knee still hurts off and on to this day (it happened 4 years ago)...now i only wear wrist pads :D

No matter how good of a skater you are, you should always wear wrist guards. There is always that chance that something unexpected will happen, like a landslide or some little kid or his childish father throwing a branch in your path. I can (and do) deal with cuts and scrapes. I don't mind bleeding or scars as much as I mind a broken wrist or arm. So wear the wrist guards and skate safely! :)

i don't rollerblade much, and when i do, i'm so slow that i don't really worry too much about padding.

however, i'd strongly recommend a helmet if you skate aggressively. one of my buds was skating on trails at a park here and got going really fast down a hill. at the bottom of the hill was a low bridge and he didn't have time to stop or duck, so he ended up bashing his head into a bridge support. fortunately, he had on a helmet, so he just had a sore butt the next day :D otherwise, it could have been :disa:

:stupid: True, I always wear pads. 99% of the time I don't need 'em, but that one time can really suck! If you accidentally hit water, the wheels lose all grip and you'll go flying.

One time I didn't wear elbow pads and I was goofing around with friends and dint see the dividing reflector on the road...biffed it pretty bad and cut up my elbow. Not too fun!

Is that something you're into too? :P
I usually don't wear much protective gear. I ice skate a lot so I'm not used to wearing all that padding.

:heh: Now that I think about it, I have to agree. I don't want to be slicing off certain body parts with some sharp blades. :D

i would never be caught dead in that stuff unless i was playing a serious game of hockey.

On a side note, I think motorcycle helmet laws suck too. In MI, some cities even force bicyclists to wear a helmet. That is complete bull$hit. what ever happened to freedom of choice. you screw up, you live with the consiquences

Sorry... I used to volunteer in the ER, so I've seen more smashed heads than I want to. :(
