Direct Connect is the only reason I use Nextel. As far as the cellular side goes, I think Nextel is garbage which is why I carry my Verizon phone with me.

I was always under the impression that Direct Connect was some kind of localized two-way radio feature that bypassed the need for cell networks if two people were close enough and thus saved minutes... but then I got the impression from their website one day awhile ago that you have to pay extra for this feature, and it has its own set of minutes (or you can pay more for unlimited?). What's the deal with that?

Nextel's used a lot by the senior staff in my office, half because of the Direct Connect thingy, and half because for some reason only Nextel and Voicestream (which are both GSM, I believe... I know at least Voicestream is) are the only networks that consistently penetrate into our underground Washington DC office. Wow that sounds cool...underground DC office... but it totally isn't. I dunno... I use Cingular, I like them, and over the past three years of service I've manipulated them into my bitches. The people in the store get nervous when I come in because I know more than they do about their products... it was fun when the lady was programming my phone for service down here and she made a mistake in the Nokia service software which I corrected for her, even though consumers aren't supposed to have that software or know how to use it... heh.

Dopey, what is this Direct Connect you are talking about?

Ben, VoiceStream's network is 100% GSM, Nextel uses iDEN. Nextel's DC feature is similar to a 2 way radio, but it works on the iDEN network. It is generally used in the local markets. Personnally I've used it over 60 miles in the Chicago market which reaches as far north as Wisconson, south to St. Louis, East to Gary, IN and West to mid IL.
It has it's own set of minutes which depend on the plan you choose. Some plans give unlimited min and some limited.

Yeah, I guess the topic should be more specific. Is this regarding Nextel or the P2P sharing?

as far as the nextel phones go, it annoys the hell out of me. Who wants other people to hear their conversation? Its obnoxious. I hate how the people who use it have the beeping turned up really loud as well. Like i care you are talking to somebody.

A guy in my office just switched over and it annoys the hell out of me. All you hear is the beeping over and over. Hes the type to say "hey a$$hole, hows it going" as a greeting. That would piss me off if it announced that while I was in a public place.

That technology is annoying and wortheless in my books. I prefer my trusty TDMA at&t phone

The P2P file sharing program known as Direct Connect has been my right hand man since I found it almost a year ago.

230 movies (home movies, of course)
countless MP3's (personal, unsigned recordings, of course)
70 Dreamcast games (the covers of the games ;) )
several PC games (same as above ;) )

All I will say for sure is that it is a solid program. My school has one of the largest hubs of the whole bit... VT Divx (3) is always at max capacity of 500.

I like to say that this is the link between IRC and Napster. Good find.

DC is pretty good, used it before but man there are just way too many P2P clients out there... dunno how to search them all... hotline, DC, .... and then there are the Kazaa and Morphoues ones.... i remember when everything was just IRC (mIRC and pIRC....)

Is it possible to connect to more than one hub at a time?
