This is a stumper for me. I've updated firmware in Win98 and WinNT, but this is a new one for me. I checked out Microsoft's Technet, MSDN, and done searches on the web, but haven't found anything that gives a tutorial on how to update firmware in a XP environment for any hardware. Some Digital Camera companies mention using a Firmware Updating Utility that they've created, but no idea and don't want to just test them out on my system.

Anyone have a clue?

Below is what I would do on any other Win system, but XP doesn't use mscdex, but instead uses mscdexnt. And of course, XP doesn't use config.sys or autoexec.bat. This is straight from the Asus e608 DVD firmware README.

You'd think Microsoft would put this info on their support site.
I quote Charlton Heston from Planet of the Apes: "Damn them all to hell"

Express Setup
-------------
The Express Setup will install the CD/DVD-ROM driver by its default.
If you are a novice in computer, it is suggested that you use this option.

The Express Setup will

1. copy Installation Disk files to C:\ASUS_CD directory.

2. back up CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to CONFIG.000 and
AUTOEXEC.000 respectively.

3. modify CONFIG.SYS by adding the following lines:
[COMMON]
DEVICE=C:\ASUS_CD\ASUSCD.SYS /D:ASUSCD01
LASTDRIVE=Z

4. modify AUTOEXEC.BAT by adding the following line:
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:ASUSCD01 /V or
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:ASUSCD01 /V
depending on where the MSCDEX.EXE is located.

I've updated a TDK 24X10X40, Iomega 12X10X32, and Lite-On 40X12x48 within WinXP. I think on two of them (TDK and Iomega) I used a boot disk (copy the update program to the floppy) and updated the firmware after the machine booted and found the CDROM. For the Lite-On, I just ran the update program within WinXP. WinXP wasn't listed as an operating system to run it on, so I used the compatability option and said to run it as Win2K. I haven't had a problem updating any firmware. I may have also updated one of my DVD drives, but I can't remember.
