WASHINGTON — The planet is set to expire in the year 2050 due to the over-consumption of natural resources, with the United States being the worst offender, according to a report expected to be released Tuesday.

The World Wildlife Fund is keeping a tight grip on its "Living Planet" study, but the U.K.'s Guardian Unlimited Observer Monday said the report warns that the human race will no longer be able to sustain itself on this planet in 50 years.

I guess every major religion has an "end of the world" belief. Now the religion of Extremist Environmentalism has its own.

Hmm.... at least they give us longer to live than the
fundamentalist Christians, who seem to be predicting the end any year now... :P

Seriously, though... the planet will still sustain life in 50 years. We're not going to run out of resources completely. They may get scarce... but that'll just drive the cost of them up, so they'll be used much more sparingly.

We may not be able to sustain our CURRENT rate of consumption in 50 years... but people will adapt, and make do with what we have. If we have to lead simpler lives, well, that's what we get for living large now, rather than rationing our resources a little...

I remember 30 years ago that the experts told us that there would be no more oil left within the next decade.
As to food production, a lot of shoddy governmental policies and/or corrupt rulers, poor land management and/or storage and distribution methods prevent a lot of people from obtaining the basic needs of life.
Still, I don't envision 8-10 billion or so people enjoying the pleasures of travelling in decked-out SUV's to the local golf course by 2050.

"This just in...Chicken Little is reporting that the sky is falling. Details at 11. Back to you, Chet."

I agree with environmentalists but extremism of any sort is not really a good thing. Go hug a tree.

Jack Van Impe says it's going to happen sometime between 2011 and 2018. I like his tv show, he's smart and pretty funny, but I don't think I'd plan my life around those dates.

FYI - Christianity generally does not predict the "end of the world". The bible describes a tribulation, culminating in a tremendous battle at the valley of Armageddon, followed by the return of Christ. But no mention of the world blowing up or anything.

I'll be 78 by then, so I'll be lucky if I'm still around. Hopefully by that point we'll have found some way to use our resources more efficiently and be a bit more friendly to the environment. The one thing which could be a problem is our population growth, especially in areas which have already overtaxed their resources.

Jack Van Impe has been wrong so many times that I don't even pay attention to him anymore. He is a big joke and his wife is just another watered down Tammy Baker.

I think he means, up to this point, the world hasn't ended yet, Jesus hasn't returned, and we haven't reached Armageddon yet.

This despite countless predictions that it'll happen in year xxxx....

So, to this point, they've all been wrong...

Even 99 and 44/100% of all Christians think these people who set dates are wackos. Mark 13:32 says "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." What part of "NO ONE" don't they understand?

2050 hmmm... not particularly worried about that date. At the rate I'm going, I'm sure I'd be able to find someone I've pissed off enough to kill me long before that. :P
