firewire direct is having a clearance sale, and have many Oxford 911 based bridges on sale.
The oxford 911 is the best performing 1394b chip to date. They have links to benchmarks on their site.

Note: site slow. They have had DOS attacks today, so you may not be able to connect at first.

I just got a PCI firewire card at Fry's for $24.99 (with a 6-foot 6pin to 4pin cable).
Works great with my MiniDV cam.
Also came bundled with a Ulead video editing software title. Ehhh... But for $25... no complaints. Sometimes a 6-foot firewire cable is as much as $20... or more!

Since we're on discussion about Firewire, I was wondering if the firewire connection in the SOny Vaios work with non-sony product because their website makes it sound like it only works with sony products. I'm pretty sure my canon camcorder will work with it though right? its universal right? I don't think there's a "sony firewire" in existence...I hope. I just ordered a vaio that's why, and it just came to mind. Thanks

if your sony firewire is IEEE 1394 compatable, then it can work with other firewire products. most companies don't call it firewire because if they did, they would have to pay apple to use the name. just like how people have to pay apple for using the name scsi (if my brain remembers correctly.)

apple owns the firewire name but doesnt charge for the use of it. Sony uses firewire, but it has a slight twist. they only provide a 4 pin connector, so the extra pins used to power devices are eliminated. The result is you need external power supplies to power things that a normal implementation of firewire could do alone. For instance, the iPod uses the extra pins to recharge the unit as it charges. With the sony, this would never happen.
With a firewire media player, can the media be accessed fast enough to allow the fast data transfer? I know they have some "high speed" media, but I have never seen read/write speeds for the cards. I have seen a few digital cameras that use firewire, but never paid attention to their media types.
