Strata 3D 3.0.
This is a very good program to learn 3D modeling and animation on. It used to retail for around $1500. Now it's free. Why, you ask? Who knows! But later this summer the price goes back up to $595. Also, you can get the boxed CD and manual for $39.
or just go to www.3d.com (http://www.3d.com) and search around.
Free now, $600 later? hmmmmm

does anyone know how this compares to 3D studio max 3.0?? i use max frequently, so it would be nice to try out a similar product.

I'm a Maya and Max user, but I used version 1.5 of Strata many moons ago - It compared very favorably back then. It has a similar feel to Max, and actually was the inspiration for the transform locator that Maya and Max now use. Go for it!

In my opinion, Bryce is unparalleled for creating photoreal outdoor environments. Strata might be interesting for you to check out if you want to create and animate objects, vehicles, characters, etc. They can integrate fairly well with Bryce, because they have common interchange formats for geometry.

Is anyone else having problems downloading. I think this eBot software does not like firewalls.

Haven, the site gives you an option to download using either ebot or HTTP. I have a firewa11 on our network at the office, and I did not have any problems downloading using the HTTP option.

I installed it and it wants a registration number, and to see a CD in the drive. I got the free download, but I have no reg # or CD... Anyone know what's going on here? I looked all over for the reg # but.... poopoo on them!

This is one of the best deals I've gotten from this board. Thank you very much(TYVM).

You are very welcome http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif That's high praise, considering the untold thousands we've all saved using Apex's deals!
Also, regarding the registration number, there is a button to hit the first time you run the program that sends you to a registration page. If you fill this out
(and use a real email address) they send you the number you need instantly.

I've always wanted to give 3D stuff a try and this makes it pain($)-free.

If you don't want to use HTTP to download it, you can use your FTP client to get it directly from:

free.digitalriver.com

It's located in /pub/strata3/
For those with direct FTP clients, click on this: ftp://free.digitalriver.com/pub/strata3/strata3d.zip
