If it came with a heatsink, you might try to remove it and check underneath. If not, what is written on the chips?
On second thought, I'm not sure if you want to try to take the heatsink off... it is a gamble, because if you are wrong, and you screw up the ram, good luck in getting it replaced.

i took the heatsink off but the samsung sticker was removed. the chips say samsung and have a part number, but on the website it lists it as only available as 256mb, and i know its 512 at least.

So you have a 512 meg stick of Samsung DDR2700 ram, that only comes in a 256 meg variety? I know other manufacturers use Samsung chips, maybe that is your explanation?
