Help
I bought a 120 GB Western Digital Hard drive and my Bios will not support it. It just freezes up where the bios is detecting drives.

Bios information:

Program: Unicore BIOS Agent Version 1.8
BIOS Date: 09/16/98
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 09/16/1998-i440BX-W977TF-P6BX
BIOS Eval: P6BX-Me Ver 1.1d 09/18/1998
Chipset: Intel 440BX/ZX rev 2
Superio: Winbond 977TF rev 0 found at port 3F0h

Is it possible to update my bios to allow me to set up this new drive.
I am running Win XP Professional and I don’t have any free expansion slots for those up date cards.

So basically I need to know if there are any workarounds for my problem or is my bios upgradeable. Or can I get a new chip or something. And if my bios is upgradeable where do I get the up grade from.

Thanks

What is the make and model of your mobo? Have you checked the vendor's site for BIOS updates?

do you have the right settings for the jumpers? also if you have more than one connector on the ide cable which one is it hooked up to? it may make a difference

it is a MainBoard brand board and model P6BX

the reason i think it is the bois is that i called WD and they told me my jumper settings where correct and that it is a BIOS problem tehy said my only 2 options where to try and upgrade teh BIOS and to buy a controler card. and i dont have any empty slots for a controler card.

also they said their software that is suppose to resolve these problems will not work because it is not compatible with Windows XP Pro

also i was wondering if i could get around this problem by buying a firewire enclosure and conection the drive to my FireWire card. or would there still be the size limitation. i am not wanting to boof from this frive i just want it as a data storage drive if that makes any differance.

Thanks,
Gary
