I thought the max speed a cdr could be burned at was only limited to the speed of the burner?

hey does NERO recognize your burner? Like when you open it, you should be able to see your drive's name and model number on the bottom right. I don't know why but mine always lets me burn at 24x no matter what media I use. I have a lite on 24x btw.

I use version 5.5.8.2 for Nero and it is capable of burning at 40x.

Any version previous to that one is NOT able to.

it recognizes the drive and stuff...and i do have 40x media now. could it be becasue i didnt set the burner to slave or master or soemthing? i dunno i am just trying to think of ideas. how do i turn on dma that might be it...any other ideas?

i am going to try upgrading to the newest firmware and the newest version of nero

What kind of burner do you have?
What speed does nero pick the burner up with no cd in the drive?
What is the fastest you have burned at before?

Upgrade Nero and the Firmware, good idea.

CD-R/RWs are not capable of DMA, only PIO I think mode 4 is the highest for them.

i turned off smart burn...supposedly it is telling me the memorex disks suck.

all i did was turn on dma and turn off smartburn. burns cds at 40x now.

i have a lite-on 40x/12x/48x
with no cd its rated at 40x
the fastest i burned with my old burner was 8x because well it was a 8x.

yes i also did that.

pio limits the speed on them. so if u put dma(if possible) then it will go faster (so ive heard)

snowsurfer, yep, DMA appears to have been your problem, for some reason (maybe it's one of Bill Gates' ways to taunt us) DMA gets shut off and PIO mode is enabled (and PIO sucks really bad), so you can more than likely turn Smart Burn back on and it will burn at 40X still....I had this same exact problem, yes cdr/w drives will run in DMA mode (mode 2), you should also now notice a largely increased rip speed, and greater access to do other things while burning or ripping a cd.
