y'all remember that movie "nell" with jody foster? the one where i guess some peeps find her in the bfe and she never learned a current language?

out of curiosity, how long would you be able to live with someone like that? someone that's saying stuff, but nobody understands it. and because they weren't raised in society, they have no idea as to tone or inflection or whatever...so a good amount of time they are louder than they need to be.

everyone would like to think they could do it forever, because they understand that it's not the person's fault. that's the *nice* answer. but we were all raised a certain way and have certain things we expect in communication. so then, what would be the *real* answer?

From 10 minutes, to forever... depending mostly on what the person had to say.

After having friends with cerebral palsy, speech impediments, and being blind (no eye contact, odd facial expressions), I've learned to adapt to some twists on communication.

But I have no patience for people with nothing intelligent to add... Saying something stupid, no matter how eloquently, is more painful than listening to something insightful, even if you have to work to puzzle it out.

I guess that's why political speeches drive me nuts. :P

But it wouldn't be easy... Communication is such an ingrained skill, and learned so early, that even the tiniest differences can make understanding extremely difficult...
