hahahahhaa man i was fear factor and they had "gross" things to eat using billiards to determine what u get.. then one of them is the 1000 year old egg.. (pei dan) sooo funny cause it is so common to us, it is good (have it once in a while for a quick lunch with rice :P)... they just can't stand eating it.. so funny..
i would have been scared of the live ants and pepper more...

I saw the episode tonight too. I thought the things they had to eat were really gross. Wasnt the egg 100 yrs old though?

ughhhh I read the description and got chills. Sounds pretty bad, but i guess all cultures have their weird food. Even in America, hindus probably cringe at the thought of eating beef.

haha yea they say 100 yr (of course not) but i think packaging usually says 1000... it is pretty good actually with soy sauce and parsley and sugar... that and rice makes a perfect lunch for me =)

i am tempted to try the japanese disk (squid..) but the other two pepper and ants i can do without..... hmmm then again anything with rice is good..=P

i have it with jook and plain old rice...good stuff

i had a roommate, who after he had it with me liked it. One day he wanted to have some himself, so he took it and boiled it. FOr those who eat the pei dan, you know you dont cook it, you just peel and eat. So he finished boiling it, and tried peeling it, but it just melted over his hands, and clothes and rug. That was one of the worse smell i have ever smelled.

The eggs have been given such an unfair description! :( Not that I spend my time tossing back mugs of battery acid, but I certainly wouldn't characterize the eggs as tasting like alkaline. They're actually pretty bland, except for the yolk ... which is the best part!

It would have been a hoot to test the contestants by having them eat a dim-sum classic, chicken feet (fong jow)! :heh: I have yet to meet a non-Asian who will even consider trying this ...

Btw, funny story, raimin! :laugh2:

Fong jow is so good! Easily one of my favorite dishes, but not if it's the kind where it's served cold and without the marinade. That is not too good.

hahah hmmm :hehehmm: I remember bringing non-asians to dim sum, don't remember if they tried the feet though =P

I think they just like to describe it that way to pysch them out... but i think after the pepper they would not be able to taste a thing, it is just that they try to eat everything in one bit without much chewing that is making them choke!

Mmmm...jook. I don't like "pei don" in it. I think I like it plain and just add salt. 100/1000 yr old egg is nothing compared to that one episode where they had to eat Rocky Mountain oysters...ugh...the juices that squirted out...NASTY!! Or the roll the dice, pick you poison, blender and drink the shake...I think it was with Wrestling celebs.

I dont like it personally but just suck out the juices and eat what meat there is...spit out the extra. Could be worse...anyone eat/drink pig's blood or brain? I maybe Chinese but I'm not crazy!!:P

Yah...are those the tofu shaped things but are made of solid pigs blood? Yah..I'm not a very big fan of that either...I take the 1000 year old egg over than easily.

...Ingredients include a blend of equal parts of ash from charcoal, pine wood, and fireplace, along with salt and strong black tea...

Well granted... I've heard that the larger the pepper, the less hot it is (which is why "dried peppers" are hot as hell!)

Maybe the counterbalance between the heat of the pepper reacted against the taste of that dayuum squid/egg :puke:

I'm just thinkin' that they're going to have a hell of a time when it comes out
