View Full Version : The Golden Orb

I feel this should also be in the deals section as well as the hardware because of the popularity of the Golden Orb. There have been some cases of destroyed CPUs and Shredded fingers (me being the latter) due the the force needed to twist the Orb into place. I have a quick guide to make the orb much more pliable:

Materials needed:
1 Golden Orb
1 Needle nose pliers

Quick note: The following is done OFF the CPU
The installation comes with the ORB. Also, this is for the Socket 370/472 version. The whole idea though will still work for other versions.

When you twist, two pegs travel up two ramps to create the "hold", just before falling into a notch. Twist the pegs to the peak right before the notch. Now take the pliers and tug at each end of the clip(the part where it actually clips to the socket) Tug hard on each side about a dozen times.

Note for excessive people (ie. me): "Hard" does not mean "all your strength". We just want to loosen up the metal.

There, now install as normally. Enjoy!

BTW, if I get enough request, I'll make a quick webpage and post pics.

just wanted to comment and say that in general, the non-flip chips are a little more tolerant of the GO's, because of the extra metal between it and the chip.

btw, did you know that if you were a reseller; that you can get the Golden orbs for $9? I went over there (their main office is a block away), and said that! But i didn't have a permit http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif

chosenfool:

It was your experience that urged me to write "the guide". I felt very uncomfortable with appling that much force. Even after the "tweak", it took a bit a force (but a reasonable amount this time).
I'll get a website with some pics hopefully next week (I have to get a camera first).

On a side note: out of all the Golden Orbs, I got a bad one. It seems the wires are loose, as the fan keeps cutting out. Anyone have a similar problem?
