View Full Version : Devotional - long but awesome nonetheless...

...and timely for me esp with my recent promo. I was gettin a bit discouraged, but kept encouraging myself that God was going to give me what He promised me. I recieved this today...

SEEDS OF PROMISE
By Dawn Jones

Paging through a botanical magazine last winter, I found myself marveling at the beautiful flowering trees and exotic plants pictured inside. In a moment of sheer inspiration, I decided it would be awesome to have more in my yard than one scruffy pine tree surrounded by a few faded wood chips. Whether impetus or impetuous, this surge of enthusiasm compelled me to order the "Jasmine flowering tree" so exquisitely displayed on page 5.

I was jazzed. In fact, I couldn't wait to get my plant.

Weeks after I had placed the order, however, my excitement was beginning to wane. "Where's my tree?" I wondered. "Spring will be over next week, and I still don't have an award-winning landscape!"

Finally, a package from California arrived. Staring blankly at the way-too-small parcel, I decided it must be the invoice or perhaps the all-important stakes needed to support my new tree. As I opened the little brown box, I simultaneously surveyed the area around me, looking to see where the rest of my delivery was hiding.

After carefully unveiling the mysterious arrival, I stared motionless into the shallow carton. Finally, in disbelief and agitation, I drew out a package of tiny, unimpressive seeds.

My initial excitement quickly dissipated. "You've got to be kidding me," I moaned. "They actually expect me to plant these dead flakes?" I simply could not imagine that I would have to WORK to obtain this tree.

Suddenly I came to a sobering realization: That's how many people would like to go through life--wanting results without doing the work, expecting a harvest without planting the seeds. Unfortunately in God's kingdom it doesn't work that way. In fact, most of what God accomplishes on Earth today starts in seed form.

When God wanted to send a deliverer to save mankind, He sent a seed and placed it in a plain human package. No wonder those who had so long awaited the coming of the Messiah were less than impressed to see an ordinary baby instead of a king.

And what about the teachings of this infant grown to full stature? He taught that the kingdom of God was like a seed which, when planted, would grow gradually: "first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head" (Mark 4:28, NASB).

In other words, Jesus told us that the dealings of God would almost always involve a maturing process. God gives us seedlings of promise that must be nurtured and cared for until they can stand tall like an oak tree.

So many times we get discouraged when we don't see quick results from our labors. We may even become so frustrated that we are tempted to stop and quit. But God's Word helps us remember this principle: The plantings of the Lord begin in seed form.

In Old Testament times when Zerubbabel was rebuilding the temple, people laughed and scoffed as they compared the fledgling work to the majesty of the original built by Solomon. But through a messenger the Lord sent reassurance: "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin" (Zech. 4:10, NLT).

Right now you may have a beautiful picture in your heart of what you long for. You may even have dared to ask God for great things and have sensed His promise to you of success.

But when you opened your hands to receive, all you found was seeds-small, unimpressive conceptions. Don't be discouraged! Remember that seeds contain life and have within them the very essence of your promise. If you plant them in good soil and invest yourself in the nurture and development of them, they will grow and bloom forth with fruit.

Today, hear the Holy Spirit whisper to you, "Do not despise the day of small beginnings, for I delight to see the work begin." Plant your faith, my friend, and watch and see what God will do.

PRAYER POWER
Week of 8-5-02

Thank the Lord this week that each day is an opportunity to sow and nurture seeds of faith for the fulfillment of your dreams. Continue to pray for the salvation of lost souls and for God's kingdom to be established throughout the world. As you pray for the peace of Jerusalem and surrounding nations, ask for godly wisdom for those who make decisions affecting the entire world. Gal 6:7-9; 2 Cor.15:58

I don't know chrissy, they come from all over anymore..I would bet some hard cold cash on this one..hahaha it's just very very strange that the moment that the YDF religious zealot posts were approached, G|A has turned into a new found mecca for prayer. Maybe Apex should have a religious forum..if I want to be preached to/at I'll go to church. This stinks to high heaven of a YDF PRAYER THREAD.

Hmm very interesting. I agree that overdoing it on any kind of thread it not very productive. For instance too many murder stories suck, too many sports thread suck, and too many religious threads suck. I mean, it's just like when some who will remain nameless, would post like 10 jokes in a row in separate threads. Keep it all in one thread if it's going to be the same thing over and over.

At the same time though I believe that whenever someone new comes to the boards and discover how diverse our group is, they tend overpost and monopolize the boards for a while. But they usually settle down after a while. So will latingirl, I imagine.

I think the thing we always end up coming back to is respecting eachother's viewpoints. Just remember that not all are religious, not all are sports fans, and not everyone will agree with you. But if you present your opinions to these boards in a respectful way, even if no one agrees with you it will atleast allow people to see your perspective, without discounting it immediately.

before you enter the thread, there is the topic heading, and in most cases, it is some indication of what will be in the thread itself. I think its fairly simple to skip over the threads that you don't wish to read, I do that all the time. :) That way, people can post as they please, at GAM's discretion of course, and people reading it have themselves to blame if they enter a thread that was accurately identified in the subject heading.

I had an agrguement with some posters on my work board where someone put in satan worshipping as a thread to directly attack someone who posted about bible studies! I was not pissed that he posted a tpoic like that, i was pissed casue 1) he did it to attack the other guy directly and mock him 2) because he can't even back up what he said, like meeting and stuff... I am open to it if they really had one, but they ended up not really serious about meeting nor have any information backing it up, I had been in a Pagan society before so them doing that with nothign to back up was just unacceptable (personal attack and company saw that so banned that post)

We lambaste Ribitch for his frequent vocal support of Apples. He's not afraid to insert his Apple promotion in any thread where it even remotely applies. And I could be accused of doing the same for Linux. That irritates a lot of people. But what we're seeing now is exactly the same situation, but with religious ideals being promoted instead. And to those who subscribe to a different system of belief, it can be annoying.

I try very hard to take everyone's point of view into account. I have no one on my ignore list. I can politely disagree with almost anyone, and still value their opinion. But that's an extremely difficult task when it comes to religion. Ration and logic go completely out the window when someone tells you you're going to hell, and they're going to heaven.

Religion is an issue where most people have little or no tolerance for disagreement. Recent threads have clearly shown that.
G|A is a tightly knit community, but religion is one issue, perhaps the only issue, that could tear us apart. So for the sake of G|A, let's all take a step back and think about what we post, before we post it.

If you're religious, preach with your actions, instead of with your words. Lead by example, rather than by fire and brimstone. One shoulder to lean on is worth more than a million "Praise Jesus!" shouts. You'll accomplish more, and alienate fewer people.

If you're not religious (like me), let's leave the religious threads alone. I don't spend much time in churches, and I'll treat overtly religious threads the same way. If I'm not there to worship, I'll stay out, and leave it to the folk who want to be there.

We can all co-exist, religious and not, if we respect each other's rights, both to be able to speak our mind, and not to have to listen.

We can all co-exist, religious and not, if we respect each other's rights, both to be able to speak our mind, and not to have to listen.

well said, i don't usually talk much about religion directly, usually just in my words and actions it should show, at least I hope it does  only talk about it in threads like these are when something very inspiring hits =P haha as I said in some other post, don't shoot the poor pamplet distributer on the street, just don't take the pamphlet or throw it away....

Imma just gonna say one thing:

To me, the word Devotional is a religious word. Maybe it is just the churches I grew up in and am attending now. I don't know. So I could figure out automatically that this was a thread about a Devotional LG had at church. It seemed like a simple deduction right away.

I'm with LG, Clueless, Nuts & gigger. This is an off topic forum, her thread titles were clear enough. If you don't like it, don't read it. If you do get confused about the thread title and click on it, then get into it and find out it isn't something you want to hear, click the Backspace key. It's that simple and you've taken about 3 seconds out of your day. Not something to get so upset about.

:)

Maybe the thread titles need to be more descriptive (I'd like that, even if they're not religious!) I regularly skip threads if the titles indicate something I don't want to read about.

Here are some examples of threads I don't read:

naughty issue with mail (or look what i got again!)
ever say "BE A F***ING MAN" to a transexual?
Teen Gets 12 years for "vampire killing"
the new yahoo mail ****s goats! (self censored)
All male naked review pix.
Hot Hooters calender Here!

Now, perhaps those threads had deeply moving, soul enriching content, but I'm not bothering to look and find out. I'm also not going to read them, and follow-up with a post saying "stop posting this stuff!"

Honestly, it sounds like some of you want to put religion in the same category as porn and potty threads.

I don't know about having a life. I mean, you both average more posts than I do. :heh: I think you can relax a bit, you don't have to jump at every chance to defend her. She handles herself very well around these parts.

Yeah i saw the "pitch". That bird pretty much exploded.

I agree, if you click on it, then don't be surprised to see what you see. People should be able to start threads about anything they want (within the rules of the site). Its an offtopic forum afterall.
However, I also believe its ok for oblong to ask why LG keeps talking about religion. Just because people don't see eye to eye, doesn't mean they gotta keep quiet and ignore everything.
The most interesting threads are the ones where people express different views.
The only problem is that people get so passionate about what they talk about that they say things that may offend people. I think that as long as people respect each other and share their views instead of putting people down, we'll be ok.

maybe it would be better if you noted in your titles of the thread that it is a religious post. neither "One Opinion" nor "Devotional - long but awesome nonetheless..." gave me the impression that it was a religious post, and had i known i probably would not have read it. tricking someone into reading your preach isnt, IMO, honest or respectful of your gospel.

Many thread topics are misleading. But as for this thread topic, perhaps it may be misleading to some because "devotional" may perhaps be used in a different context, but for those who are Christians, Catholics, etc., many would assume that LG meant it in a religious sense.

agreed. Its not up to the mods. each user should have 'nuf brains to know what belongs in which forum. But if this topic isn't suitable for the off-topic, which is? Automobile? Software/OS? Got Deals? everyone has their own thing they like to discuss. examples: about their kids, relationships, God, Mel Gibson, news stories, food, etc. I'd be all for it if there were specific thread categories that these would be posted under, but there aren't.

I doubt people would be so open in these forums to hear someone telling them they need God and that God needs them to obey him if
it didnt come from a female that us guys assume is "hot."

Theres a few spouting off against religion and I can appreciate Lg expressing her views, but lets be for real

-jel:|

Quoting myself :P
Like I said when Lg posted her 1st religious post(christianity) i was suprised no one really confronted her.

I'm not posting to stir up anything but Ob has a right to say what she feels on the subject and unless Apex says differently Lg can post what she wants to.

Lg, no one said being a Christian was going to be all roses. Christ had all the answers and he got a crown of thorns for all his troubles.
Deal better with rejection be more "Christlike."

Ob, I understand you not liking the subject but Lg is a newb and she has a right to post. She hasn't tried to convert anyone... (yet :P) or ask for donations for her church.

I've read posts from both you all and you both seem nice with decent hearts. If you two could get past the religious thing, we could all learn something by it.

I'm just rambling, forgive me.

I just want to say one thing.

This has gone WAY overboard. I mean, ppl have gone off and, I feel, took this way to heart.

When Latingirl started posting the topics at hand, I could care less that she was doing it. And I still do. And I don't really think Obby minds either when it comes down to it. (I know, Obby loves assumptions on her feelings :P )

Just like I posted, I thought it was queer that a new female was posting religious threads so soon after the thread about YDF and their "dear god, please let me find good freebies and let billyjobob and her 12 illiterate children send me the recipe for moondoggie hash in a relatively short amount of time".. as to quote the previous thread.

We have always had religious thread here (and alway will), mostly debate threads and not inspirations though. Inspirations can be good everyonce in a while, especially with our rag tag group :P

I don't think it was a bashing comment to make. It was just an observation on my part (I can't assume Obby's feelings on that :) ) and didn't mean anything "harsh or bashing" by it.
